Belly dance 2019

I typed "belly dance 2019" into my server to see what came up. Here are some of the results. What do you think?

Some interesting body gymnastics and poses, but ultimately not much dance. I quit watching about 4 minutes in and jumped ahead several times, but seemed like 9+ minutes of the same stuff.

Haven't seen anything yet that makes me want to throw babies in the air, but after watching a few videos, I do want to hiss, "Quit messing with your damn hair."

Cute idea but it went on too long and threatened to turn a nice performance into what Serena Wilson called A Shimmy Bore. Ten extra points for that skirt, though!

Good ol' Serena, Goddess Bless her! I actually liked this one - yea, maybe a bit too long, but worth watching. I'd be a bit scared of that skirt rotating around where I didn't want it - but she pulls it off.

And I couldn't watch more than about 20 seconds of that...

She does a nice sustained shimmy starting around 4:30 ish. I hope that is her husband she kissed. You are right, there is a lot of posing. I want to know what's with the 2 minutes or more of hair flinging?

Seriously, my trip through YouTube land left me feeling a little bummed out by the lack of nuanced, interesting belly dancing. Hair flipping, swinging, fluffing, and grabbing combined with prolonged shimmies and dramatic posturing seem to be the order of the season. :( Surely someone out there has better recent videos than I could find.

I think I figured out the posing. I think it's bleed-over from all the classically trained ballet dancers who switched over to BD a few years ago. I noticed it's even more prevalent in eastern block dancers and I'll bet it's just been absorbed by others who watch them. Some of them dance so beautifully it's not surprising.

There is a lot of hair flinging though. A LOT. It mostly seems to be khaleegy influenced. I wonder how many even know that though?

Anyway, I don't know about better but here's a few I found:

And this little cutie-

You could be right about the posing, Ariadne. It's certainly a more generous viewpoint than mine, which is posing, hair flinging, endless shimmies, and forty-five turns per four minute performance are easier than learning and utilizing a decent dance vocabulary.

How about some more or less recent dancing by Tito Seif?

What. was. that?

That was "A Thing" in Egypt earlier this year. No, make that "The Thing" in Egypt earlier this year. Believe it or not, that was appropriate.

She's working a wedding where she's performing to one of the biggest songs of last winter--a sensation that will forever define Mohamed Ramadan's career and that was accompanied by a viral trend called the "Mafia Dance" where people pointed their fingers like guns and thrusted their hips like the choreography in the music video. There are probably hundreds of hours of non-famous Egyptians doing this same dance uploaded onto YouTube.

(I was actually toying with the idea of doing a Halloween hafla performance to this song because that's the sort of place where it belongs outside of the context of a party where everybody wants to dance to it. It's a novelty, but it's also authentic. I get so tired of Halloween haflas where it's an endless evening of weird goth belly dancing.)

I'll be back with a few more thoughts later...
