I don't really know anything about the herstory of the coin flipping trick... Ok, it's not everyone's cup of tea and yes I'm most interested in the quality of dancing too. But I'm also not above enjoying a bit of show boating or cheeky humor or what have you. There are many articles, both fantasy, foreign & 'authentic' used in Oriental dance 'at the source' and elsewhere that are about "showing off" your dexterity, balance, control etc. like goblets, swords, dancing on top of a tabla…

Nope, got the same thing. I'll try it on a different computer and see if this one is missing some essential program to pick your video page up. I did see the coin flipping video, which I thought was pretty cute.

I would imagine tht street dancers in the past did all kinds of tricks to "amaze" their audiences. I would love to have a "collection" of the weird and wonderful things belly dancers and other "oriental" dancers have done.
Off to look for that wonderful chair trick. YouTube - Princess Raja - 1904 I have to say tricks have a place probably with the GP and less likely at a show attended by belly dancers. I love to see people's reactions and I hope traditions of dancers trying to earn their livings with interesting tricks in past continue. Last edited by lizaj; 09-18-2008 at 11:21 AM. |

That snake dance is part of a Goddess Birth Mime ritual. The snakes are symbolic of the small self and the higher Self. In the full dance, the snakes do their face off, come together into a caducus, then a figure 8 of infinity, into a "1000 petalled lotus" taking in illumination and inspiration. The lotus finally turns into that wiggly sperm, a "spark" of infinite possibilities that is brought to my belly and embodied. I hope to get the whole Birth Mime routine on video soon. For years it was the only dance I did. Seems like a lifetime ago. |
