Default Learning bellydance online?

Hi people

Its hard for a male to join a bellydance class. So i learn online. I hear its a bad idea. There are couple of youtube channels i learn from.

YouTube - genieshanu's Channel

and

YouTube - cassiopeia222's Channel

Do you guys know good video channels. Please share them. Do recommend DVDS as well.

Anyone will tell you get in class! If not in the mean time educate yourself about styles, etc of the dance.( these forums is a great place for that BTW) also watch alot of authentic dancers.

DVD's. My fav is Jenna's you find them here:
::: BeyondBellydance ::: Jenna ::: Venture beyond your expectations with bellydancer Jenna's solo performances and group belly dance classes; based in Manhattan, Jenna is available for Middle Eastern dance workshops and private lessons as well.

Or in Salome's store (click on the banner on the left)

Also read the reviews here:
What instructional DVDs/Videos you have?

Best of luck and happy dancing!

Beware of youTube teachers, some of them REALLy dont know what they are doing!

Cassiopeia is great. The other one is not. It is so easy to get bad advice and teaching on YouTube.

And did we all note that genieshanu has a montage created by PAWN1787 ( yes it's pronounced porn) who is the self same and much missed Sorcerer.

Mickyxena..if you are serious about belly dance find a reputable teacher.

I copy and paste my reply to Mickeyxena's similar posting on Bhuz.

Please don't continue learning from Genieshanu, sorry but it's real bad.

(I'm not sure if pawn = porn, some people on my msn use the word as in, for example if you beat someone in a game, you pawned that person. I have seen pronz used as porn, but not pawn)

Oh I think it is in this case! Everything has the stamp of a sleaze-bag.
I do understand the meaning of pawn but here I think the alternative speling might just be appropriate.

Hi lizaj and Moon...I'm confused about what genieshanu's taste in friends has to do with her abilities as an online teacher. (Not that I've watched her videos to judge )

But I agree with lizaj - working with a reputable, live teacher (even if only a few times a year) is a valuable supplement to your video study.

((Please forgive my nitpicking...the root of it being - I would hate to be judged by my friends. Most of them are wonderful, mature, responsible, and respectful of others...a few are troublemakers, and a couple are outright crazy))

Are you?
Would you be happy to be put up on Youtube by a guy with a liking for making up montages which hardly show dancers in their best light? I wouldn't and I don't think that teachers of any note would find that acceptable.
We are not talking friends here but a choice of someone to display one's art and this guy wouldn't be number one on any respectable dancer's list.
This girl may not have had any idea of what he is up to but just look at his other "montage"

mmmmm myself I am picky about friends..what is it they say?
"Friends you can chose, family you are stuck with".
Crazy doesn't phase me..hey I have a few dollop of that in mebut pervy...I can leave well alone....

Well, I have an issue with skill and social/business reputation being mixed up with each other. So she doesn't mind that this guy made a video of her...she's even flattered by it. That doesn't mean she's a bad dancer, or a bad teacher.

In fact, the OP isn't even taking classes in person, or developing a normal teacher-student relationship with her. So what's the harm in learning from her material? It would be as if I decided to stop using my Rachel Brice tapes, because I learned she was into polyamory (JUST AN OVER-THE-TOP EXAMPLE - I have NO reason to believe that R. is actually into polyamory, I made that up as an example).

As a feminist, I believe that the use of a "bad sexual reputation" to discount a woman's suitability for friendship or as a worker/performer is a really awful part of our society. And here it is just on online friendship that is creating this response!

I pick my friends because I like them, and they like me. All of them are flawed (as am I). I'm not saying I support everything they do or say, but I care enough about them as people that it overrides my dislike of some of their personality/mode of behaviour. It's a good thing I'm not running for President of the United States...I'd be in big trouble, then.

Where did a woman's sexual reputation come into play here?
She may be Snow White but she has shown bad judgement if she encourages the likes of PAWN to platform her.
