First off, that is not what I would call belly dance. It resembled something more Polynesian like Tahitian for most of it with some poi balls thrown in. The outfit is more of a fantasy Tahitian. Whoever posted it, mislabeled it.

Dear Elly, But don't you think that hat looks a little like what would happen if the Pope and Big Bird got together and had a girl child and bought a hat for it?? There is something ........Pontifical, yet feathery about it..... I don't know.... you don't think its too much? Okay, maybe you could wear it for the occasional Unbirthday party, or one of those early morning molotov cocktail parties, or to the racetrack, but where else would it fit in? How much use could you really get out of it? Be practical my dear and buy a nice, striped fedora instead. You can wear one of those to any funeral or all night Canasta play off. They just go anywhere! Regards, A'isha |

The outfit headdress included is a theatrical version of traditional Tahitian costume. The dance was a poor rendition of the dance, which as we all know has nothing to do with us. But once again this illustrates how ignorant many people are about what we do. The second they see a two piece out fit and some hips, they think its "belly dance". One more reason we should begin replacing the B word with the name used by the culture, Raks Sharki and Baladi. Of course in the transition we have to use both names, even interchangeably till enough people understand what we mean when we say Raks Sharki. This is a dance that relates to a region, a culture and a people. Unfortunately its been taken out of context for far too long resulting in all kinds of strange things and confusion with Indian, Polynesian, Brazilian, Shakira and Britney Spears!
