One more reason we should begin replacing the B word with the name used by the culture, Raks Sharki and Baladi. Of course in the transition we have to use both names, even interchangeably till enough people understand what we mean when we say Raks Sharki. This is a dance that relates to a region, a culture and a people. Unfortunately its been taken out of context for far too long resulting in all kinds of strange things and confusion with Indian, Polynesian, Brazilian, Shakira and Britney Spears!
I agree, but I must add this is typical of cultural misappropration seen in Euro-American culture. It was neither Oriental dance nor Polynesian but a sad display of ''see what I can do!"

I agree Yasmin-- this was not bellydance as we know it, it is increduibly annoying that these videos go out to the general public who then think this is bellydance GRrrrrrr. More amunition for the purists Im afraid, fusion can do harm!!

Dear Reen,
Well....yes, it is that bad. The problem is not the question of the quality of her work, though I thought it was rather boring and lacking skill, but that is beside the point. If she was absolutely fabulous at whatever it is she presented and it was called "belly dance", it would still be wrong because it was not belly dance. If we do not take the responsibility to be clear in what we are doing, we add to the confusion felt by the general public about the dance. We also make it even more difficult to gain respect from other dancers in other dance forms when we do not appear to understand what our own dance even is. This in the most basic terms is why I harp on being as clear as we possibly can in our definitions about what we are doing.
Regards,
A'isha

I actually think she's not belly dancing. That seems waaay more like Tahitian dance than belly dancing. That being said, I know that the people I know who dance in that style would be highly annoyed by this video.
