Shaab in a general sense means 'people'

a shaabi area means local area, generally working class. also reffered to as 'street dance etc' (but not hip hop of course)
Shaabi in the fellahin area will mean the same kind of thing.

You dont know what you are missing!

One groom I saw cupped his hands under the dancers big bosoms and jumped up and down with her. His wife sat there watching with a half shocked half bemused smile. Goodness knows what she was thinking. The rest of the crowd went wild with laughter. My mouth was stuck open for the entire night, people were laughing at me and telling me not to be shocked that this was very normal.

...starting to really see why being a belly dancer over there is not something you'd want your daughter aspiring to.

And there's us debating whether it's OK to be tipped in a bra strap

Exactly to all of the above. My husband had only seen this kind of dancing before he met me. Apart from the old movies of course and he saw this as old fashioned and stylised for films. This is how he see's belly dancing in Egypt. Of course he has changed his views now he has been shown the wider picture. He believes though we have turned it into something else which is more acceptable.

This made me laugh at least.
.

It saddens me to no end that your limited experience in seeing beautiful floorwork done would have you describe one of the most beautiful aspects of the dance in this way. This weekend I took a workshop with a master of Turkish floorwork, a woman whom I greatly admire and hold in the highest esteem, none us 'humped' or 'writhed' on the floor...I cannot imagine the kind of dancing to which you've been exposed, but I can assure you that in this neck of the woods, floorwork is presented lovingly and with great dedication to the beauty of expressiveness of this part of our shows.

Gia,
this was your earlier quote regarding floorwork and it saddens me more that you should call an Egyptian belly dancer not a belly dancer for doing something that you consider vulgar. I have since explained the context for this kind of display.
Please dont feel sad, I am one person in millions with an opinion. I did say i loved Raksans display, but you are right, the rest has looked like simulated sex to me no matter how elegant the hands and pointed toes. I begged the question, what is this expressing?
I am open to change my view just like i did when i saw Raksan. I hope you are willing to do the same when it comes to Egyptian women dancing at weddings.
