There are a few reasons why you shouldnīt dance to Sidi Mansour in a two-piece costume, first, this Tunisian song has a lot of different lyrics, depending on which version you listen to, local Tunisian musicians(where I learned the song from about 30 years ago) has one version, an old record from the same period has another, and of course all the new versions being more like popmusic has lines with other lyrics. I was told that some of the versions had semi-religious sentences, and to those, you donīt dance "half-naked", that would be an insult to religious people.
And another easy explaining is that they donīt use two-piece costumes in Tunisia exept for dancing Egyptian style to Egyptian music.... Would anyone dance Charleston in a flamencosuit............???? ![]() |

Personally, I think you can take authenticity too far. I first found Sidi Mansour on a CD I bought in Egypt called Dance 2007. If you can dance to it in a disco and it's ME, then you can do what you like as far as I'm concerned. Don't think the Tunisians would get too worked up about it. If you are dancing to ethnic music, or doing an ethnic dance style, then by all means get it right. Please don't get too precious. I admit that there are some things to be taken into account, but why must we be more pure than the actual natives. |
