Hi. I finally got to see myself on video, solo. Not as bad as I feared and not as great as I hoped . Managed to upload it on YouTube but the quality is bad. If you can stand to watch it anyway I would love to get some constructive criticism. I see quite a few things that I need to work a lot on but I don't want to say them now. I'd rather hear your opinions. I'm kinda nervous about showing this but I can take it. I would really like to hear some clever thoughts from you guys. this is from May 2007 so I can even hope that I have improved since. ![]() I should add that this is not my own choreo and that I don't consider myself to have any particular style yet.

Thank you shanazel. And thank's Moon and Maria Aya for the YouTube-comments.
I do realise that the performance is kind of bland (is that the word for "a bit uninteresting"?) From seeing this video I believe I have to work on posture (straightening up, opening the shoulders-chest-neck-chin area towards the audience), making bigger movements, becoming more engaged in the music and taking the stage in a more powerful way. I kind of like my relaxedness and I like that I adapted the choreography in the moment to fill out the stage space. Do you agree with me on this or can you see some other serious issues that needs work (hehe probably you can)? If some of you wants to take the time to criticise I'm not going to be sad or upset, I promise.

The reason I didn't criticise is my eyes are not experienced enough to immediately notice your mistakes. My first impression is I really liked it. I like relaxed dancing and you were relaxed. I thought your expression was really pleasant when they did a close up of your face. You didn't look nervous at all and also didn't seem to have some fake smile. And the costume looks really good on you

Well thank you Moon! That warms my heart.
I hope I didn't come off as fishing for compliments. It took like 8 months before I even dared to watch this video. ![]()

Wow, very nice! You looked very relaxed and smiled confidently. I know that piece of music very well so I was looking forward to see what you would do for each section. It was a nice choreography with changes of angle and direction. I thought you used your arms better than some "professionals" I have seen and you covered the stage well when you were travelling. A credit to your teacher! I agree that some of your movements could do with more emphasis but I know that it is sometimes difficult to get the energy out when performing in public. I watched right to the end, which is more than I can say for many of the supposedly professional performances on YouTube and that is a loooong piece of music.

Your performance was not bland, the choreography fit the music very well, and you adapted it perfectly, your coverage of the space was excellent. your movements are clear, on time and graceful. you have fabulous arms, you do not look nervous. If you were my student what I would tell you is to have a little more space between your armpits, when you hold your arms close to your body you change the dynamic of the rest of your movements and they will not show up as well. Many of us have this habit, I know I do, it takes time and body awareness to change that. What I have been told is to imagine you have a large peach under your arm that you have to carry around. The other thing I noticed, may be an artifact of the video. Did the costume have a body stocking? if so it appeared to be loose and or glittery and therefore unflattering, video can show many flaws that are not perceived by the human eye. I have some body stockings that look good in the mirror and look horrible on the video. Also, it is possible that because of the quality of the video, it appeared that you did not have enough lipstick on, I am always appalled at how much make up I have to wear just to look normal on stage, to look made up I have to wear even more. I enjoyed watching you. Hope these comments help. Marya |

Wow cool! Thank's a million times! I'm walking on clouds now!
Marya: The advice is great! I saw the thing with the armpits but wasn't sure what to do to improve (may sound strange but I'm not used to analyse dance). That's why I mentioned "opening the chest etc". Will certainly think about my armpits-peaches more .The other things are probably NOT due to the video. The stocking has become too loose and I will def do something about that. Actually ordered one yesterday. Hope that one fits ok. I am not a big fan of lipstick. Don't think I was wearing any at all here. My lips are naturally very defined so lipstick tends to make me look hard and strict. I promise I WILL use some on stage from now on since there's a different scale for makeup amount up there. Thank's for pointing that out. Suheir: Thank's so much for your compliments and for taking the time to watch it. Yes it is difficult to get the energy out like you said. That's why it's so good to see yourself and become aware of it. It has been the hour of truth for me, hahaha, in a good way. And thank's for complimenting my teacher. BTW since you know the music, do you know which cd it comes from?

I was so pleased you didn't look nervous and you had pretty good arms all the way through (they are the two things that I do badly first so I suppose I look for). You looked and like you were enjoying it. Then I think exactly what you said. I thought you could put energy in each move, so its not necessarily bigger but with more energy if that makes sense. And project more stage presence too. But they are things that come with experience of performing, and I thought you were really good, for your level of experience. I would look like a startled rabbit! Well done! And thanks for being brave enough to post. I keep mine hidden ![]()

Well done Gisela!!! You have done everything right. With time and practice you will improve even more. I would like to add that finding your style will also define your dance and movements much better. My only recommendation is to spice it up a bit. Other than that I enjoyed it. This is one of my favourite pieces BTW!!
