Did I get your attention?
I don't have any vids for this thread - but I really would love to see some excellent examples of dancers who do GREAT AmCab. We have so many 'Why oh why' threads, and so many 'Egyptian' threads - what about some showing AmCab? Pleeeease help - I'm sure you've got some bookmarked! ![]() ![]() ![]()

Dear Adiemus,
There are several really well known AmCab dancers who come to mind. My very favorite is Cassandra Shore, who used to do Egyptian style dance but now is very much more westernized in her styling. ( I am probably going to get some argument on this because most people think she is Egyptian.) There is Salome, Suhaila Salimpour, Alexandra King,Tina Sargent, (who people also think is Egyptian),Karen Barbee and just a whole bunch of other dancers who are incredible in the style. Now, all of these dancers are every bit as different from each other as the Egyptian dancers are from each other, but all have that strong western signature in their dance that makes the American Oriental dancers, (another name for American Caberet) I wish I had some You Tube video of any of them, but I can not get signed up. Regards, A'isha |

Great thread idea! Would like to point out that for decades "AmCab" was just belly dancing done by American performers and as it retains its ethnic roots, can look more Turkish, Greek or even Egyptian because of the different influences. It really depends on the particular dancer and what influences were strongest in her/his training.
IMHO, classic AmCab resembles Turkish style strongly, probably because some of the most influential early ethnic club performers on the East Coast and as far as Chicago were imported from Turkey. This is one of my most favorite Salome videos because it's rather rare to see real belly dancing done slowly yet beautifully to the right music. And it's especially nice to see her performing to a live band playing good, ethnic-style music.

I was a die hard Egyptian style fanatic until I took a workshop and some privates with the lovely Yemaya from Portland this week-end and she's just fabulous. She has made me LOVE Am Cab again.
I hope she puts some clips up soon! Regards Priscilla |

Adiemus, that's a terrific clip! She's classy, elegant and got that perfect example of "soul" that exemplifies the best of belly dancing
