Im a big Lucy fan as well
Waves to Luci! Thanks for posting the lyrics to the song. I think its so important to have access to lyrics, but most of us dont have an Arab speaker in our back pockets to consult with, so anytime somone is willing to translate and share lyrics its like finding gold. ![]() Anyhoo.. I was fortunate to see Luci live in Chicago when she performed at our humble little hafla held at a rough and ready sports bar on the soutside of Chicago called Tommy's Place. Luci knocked the socks off the owner, and he made the comment that she'd be a tough act to follow. Which goes to show, IMHO that Egyptian style does not need fancy tricks and gimmicks to capture the heart of the ordinary American audience. If Tommy could "get it" anyone can. Regarding Yasmilah, Im a big fan as well. I love her pure simple dance in this clip a la Suhair Zaki. I think that comparision is spot on. And to add to the video clips, here are a couple of my own favorites as well: Shanna YouTube - Shanna - By Dancers For Dancers Volume 2 Tamra Henna CA YouTube - Tamra-henna/Los Angeles and Ranya Renee YouTube - Ranya of NYC & Maqamikaze company- "Alf Leyla w'Leyla" more clips here: Bellydance New York City - Ranya and company

i LOVE this thread. LOVE IT.
that second video of lucy made me feel like she was dancing for me! and Yasmin's Christmas beledi had me here clapping and laughing as though i were in the front row! that connection is something that i only feel with egyptian style dance and it's still something that i've not yet experienced first hand. At least this thread gives me the second best thing! thank you ladies! |

Thanks, everyone, for the kind words!
For anyone who is in the area, I wanted to let you know that I'm teaching a workshop on baladi taksim in Asheville, North Carolina on Saturday, May 10. The amazing SHEMS will also be teaching that day, on oriental technique and combinations. Here's Shems' website: Shems - Professional Belly Dancer in Washington DC & Baltimore - Baltimore Belly Dance Classes - Baltimore Belly Dance I think we'll also be doing a bag lunch where we sort of informally talk about what it's like to be a professional dancer, performing in front of Arab audiences, etc. And THEN there will be a show that night! Lisa Zahiya, who is, herself, amazing, will be hosting us. I don't think there's a link up yet, but here's her website: Bellydance in Asheville, NC with Lisa Zahiya I don't teach often thanks to a brutal work and school schedule, so I'm really looking forward to this! - Lucy |

I LOVE LUCY!
but i bet she is not even old enough to remember the programme. This is the first time I have seen this dancer (and that is what is wonderful about these forums). I love her relaxed style, natural warmth and unfussy costumes. She has a lovely soft belly and a wonderfully natural form (rare these days) She has the Egyptian style off to a fine art... so unfussy and mersmerising. There are not too many dancers I could watch over and over but she is one of them. A true source of inspiration and should be a big star if not already. We need more of this and less flash! |

What about Nanna Candelaria. I first found her straight after watching a clip of Ansuya and deciding she was to busy and in your face for me.
Lovely graceful dancing but she does not seem to get much mention in forums |
