Ok, I'm starting to feel sorry for her. I'm sure she's not a bad person, just blind and overconfident as to her own abilities as we all are at one time or another.

But she definitely serves as a warning: It doesn't matter how good you feel about your own dancing, before you think you're competent to be a pro have someone film you, really look at the results and ask yourself and real professionals if you're ready for prime time.

:shok: but NOW I DO feel good about myself!!!:shok:
oops that was catty... but oh my GAWD!!!!!

Y'know, I posted my previous comment too soon. Just read her responses to two different negative criticisms. HOLY COW! And she claims to teach psychology! Wassup with that, eh Brits? I didn't know your educational system was so hard-up for instructors!

Comments like hers would put her job seriously at risk in one of diploma mills. I so wanted to leave this as a comment:tongue:

But YouTube is not so equipped, alas. I left some primly chiding language instead.

Crikey :shok: - not gracious in the face of criticism is she?

Won't say what I read in her expressions in most of her clips and photos (and writings on her website)... I'm sure it's just a reflection of some dreadful psychological defect on my part. Inner beastliness or something. :D :D :D

My problem with her is that her dancing leaves me cold. I don't get that warm fuzzy feeling of amazement and admiration that I get when I see pro bellydancers. Heck, not only pro dancers, even my fellow students give me that kind of feeling when I look at some of them. They might not be professionals, but they put their heart and soul into their dancing and it shows.

I guess I must suffer from advanced schizophrenia for saying this

Kharmine, your comments on her video are spot on. I couldn't have said it better!!

That scared me :shok: even before she put her butt into my face.
I wonder from which psychological disorder I am suffering?

Write thirteen words of less than complementary commentary on her YouTube videos and I'm sure she'll tell you. Venus envy, perhaps... no, wait... wrong mythology. Sorry.

One might be tempted to diagnose Miss Ishtar as delusional.

I've just noticed that she removed her comment about Asperger and posted some mumbo jumbo instead. Kharmine's comments have also been deleted.

Is she reading this forum?

hopefully she is. she needs a wake up call. obviously she has the spirit to dance...but not the technical ability.

maybe if she lurks she might realise that people just want her to do the dance justice and not that anyone is attacking her personally.

And if she claims to love it then perhaps she would realise as well that taking classes and studying doesn't make you any worse a dancer so she wouldn't be making herself any less to her students and audience, but rather something more by doing so.

YouTube allows video owners to allow only comments they approve of to be posted, to delete those they don't, and to rewrite their own responses.

Apparently, "QueenIshtar777" figured this out after the first negative comment and now she does diligent screenings and rewritings. Out of more than 400-500 views on two of her videos that I commented on, the videos list only 1 comment each and in both cases her previously spiteful responses have been drastically rewritten with a lot of "spiritual" blah blah.

I don't know if the video star rating is allowed to count if the video owner doesn't like it -- it appears that the average rating went back to whatever it was before I rated each "Poor." How does a rating stay "average" or better if the only comment posted is quite negative?

I've sent a suggestion to YouTube that it tweak this process so that the video owner is not allowed to present a dishonest portrayal of viewer response -- who knows if anything will change. If anyone else is interested in keeping 'em honest, more suggestions to YouTube for change might help.

BTW, did a Goggle search on Paula "Ishtar" Staunton of Liverpool/Wirral, UK, after seeing that her web site was defunct. Found one online-published article on goddess worship written by her. Couldn't find her listed as a a teacher on any faculty. so perhaps her psychology instruction is limited to workshops on "empowerment" or goddess spirituality or some such. I am much relieved.

I have asked about in Liverpool.
Ishtar studied psychology at one of the Liverpool universities as part of a course of wimmin's studies and has taught GCE courses in the past. This may or may not be accurate.
I asked a friend who has a psychology degree and postgrad degree and she is totally flumoxed by the lady's "babble". So you may speculate on the quality of those qualifications.

Also taking to Liverpool dancers, should you cross her, be it on your own head..you feel the wrath of her goddess..hence the nasty article on her website. When I read it, I wondered if anyone would be happy about family or friend near her class. She makes out she is a victim but I am afraid if she is, it is of her own making.:(
I feel very sorry that a dancer of such initial potential should go down the path she has and become one who is damaging the image of this dance in my region. She is an excellent self publicist and gets about a bit..unfortunately but isn't that the way of it. Isn't there some non psychological/ mother's wision about empty vessels?

...Isn't there some non psychological/ mother's wision about empty vessels?

I think it's in Proverbs from the Old Testament -- "Empty vessels make the most noise." Proof, yet again, that "There is nothing new under the sun."

That web site is an amusing piece of work. Once heard a Native American comment after he heard a speech, "That was sure a lotta words about nuthin'" that sums up my feelings.

Goddess beliefs can be all over the map, Most seem to be at least as positive as any other belief system, but at least one vague strain does seem to promote the kind of self-absorbed, satisfied blindness that Ishtar, unfortunately, projects. Away with the facts, it says, what makes you feel good about yourself is the only thing that counts.

It wouldn't be anyone's bidniz, however, except that it seems to be slopping over into her teaching. I've seen about three videos of her students' performances, and they are truly sad examples of the "talking about quality is so judgmental the main thing is self-esteem!" school.

That is not serving her students well. I hope to heaven they are not going out into the world thinking they are presenting good belly dance.

Here is a clue that her current and any prospective students ought to consider: If a teacher is constantly praising herself to the skies, and no one is chiming in outside her little claque of folks, there is something wrong.

Queen Ishtar's responce to hate club.

Hello,

I am absolutely amazed to find the hate club you have formed around me. Indeed I am flattered, yet a tad confused that you seem to spend so much time on my web site and looking at my you tube video’s., when you say you hate me so much.

You all should put your videos up on You Tube if you feel you are good enough to criticize me.

Their are thousands of belly dancers in Britain/the world why is your attention on me? Any way let me interrupt your feeding frenzy a moment to correct some untruths.-

I have been a psychology teacher for 9 years teaching GCSE for Liverpool City council. I received a 2-1 in my combined degree in applied psychology/Women’s studies. (I am sure you can check the councils records if you are keen to find out is this is the truth lol !!!!.) Wow! Putting in a google search to see if I am indeed a psychology teacher!!! Now that's dedication.

I do a lot of performances most of them paid. I performed for the Women’s Islamic group in Liverpool for Eid a few weeks ago. This was by request of many of the 200 or so women that attended who had seen me before. Happily they obviously chose not to listen to nasty gossip. Sorry you think they have bad taste. They know about about the other dancers in the area. I ‘get about a bit’ because people invite me.

If you wish to read what others have said about me, -professional organizations, clients. Etc Please look on my site Bellydance & Goddess Classes, Workshops, Performances & Events :: Bellydance & Occasion Clothing & Accessories for YOUR Inner Goddess :: Merseyside, Wirral and Nationwide - Home

c/ I am a dynamic and creative person. Dance is one amazing way to express my ideas.

d/ I am from a rock ‘n’ roll back ground. I hope it shows.
Here is me singing and playing guitar.

YouTube - Ishtar, sings 'Warrior'

My spirituality is concerned with acceptance of difference and making my self and those I come into contact with feel happy and confident. I have been in some bad situations due to low self esteem. I have found a way to be myself and shine in the world, I really want others to be like this also. It si sad you are sniggering at my spiritual beliefs , every one has the right to their own spirituality.

The thing about you tube is perplexing. Are you saying I have fixed getting over 8.000 hits? I have a lot of international subscribers are they also fixed?

h/You really have got it in for me. You do not have to be a psychology teacher to analyze the reasons behind the remarks. If I see some thing on You tube I don’t like I just click off and that’s the same for every thing. I don’t hate any one. I am dancer and all dancers are doing some thing beautiful in this world. For me dance is physical poetry. I really have nothing bad to say about me or any other person who has chosen dance as a career. My both grandparents where professional dancers (you can read about them on my site) Bellydance & Goddess Classes, Workshops, Performances & Events :: Bellydance & Occasion Clothing & Accessories for YOUR Inner Goddess :: Merseyside, Wirral and Nationwide - Home

I believe I am still a student of the dance and watch DVDs s of various dancers frequently. You don’t see me at any thing because I really don’t want to bump into people who are full of hate for me.

You are right to suggest I can be a bitch. I would always prefer to take the path of peace. However I was brought up in a rough area of Liverpool and I have been violent (verbally and physically) in the past and if pushed hard enough would be again.

YouTube - Gothica erotica- Dark belly dance choreography

People who know about my life threatening domestic abuse like to call me a victim. May be I was then but I am not now. I hope any women in that situation can learn from people like me.

You seem to be saying that my words are a load of nonsense. I have been published internationally. One organization is the BSY where I have three academic courses. I like to speak with clarity I have a large vocabulary. Sorry if any one did not understand some of my words/concepts.

You seem to be saying I am liar , I can’t dance and I am not intelligent. What on earth have I done to any of you to make you so full of hate? I am a dancer/writer/singer/psychology teacher. These are all nice things, to me any way. Their are wicked people like George Bush, you could give them your hate why me? I would not even recognize any of you if I fell over you!!

I am totally 100% myself I am an artist I am not motivated by market forces or other people’s morality. You can say all the horrible things it ‘s your choice.. Say it in the mirror and look at what it does to your face . I am not airy fairy I am sharp and down to earth. If I was so rubbish why has the universe supported me as a dancer and a creative person generally.

No matter how many moves you know, a personality that is twisted with spite will never be dancing to their true potential. A face that constantly says ugly things can never be beautiful.

How do you think I must feel reading these things? What would you feel like if it was you? You cannot stop me from dancing all the horrible things you have done and said has just made me stronger. You can not take away the good I have done to myself and others through dance and the happiness I have given.

If you look at all the things I do, you must realise it is team of people not just me.

Dance is my truth my light and my salvation. I am sorry my light hurts your eyes, but you always have the choice to look away. I look forward to seeing all your amazing vids on you tube. You all must be so stunning in every way to look down on me.

Ishtar, you have the right to defend yourself.
However I hope you realised most people here make critical comments about the way you dance. Those comments were pretty harsh, yes, because in your case, you're not a beginner who doesn't know any better, but a teacher! There are a lot of misconceptions about this dance and we don't like to see teacher pass on wrong posture etc. on to students of claiming a certain dance history that is not even proven to be true.
But no-one here said you are a bad person and I don't think annyone hates you. I, personaly, dislike the way you dance and it worries me you tell your students this dance has some kind of goddess-origine.

If you want to see videos of dancers who come to this forum, some of them posted them on youtube. Feel free to watch them, comment on them, like or dislike them or discuss them.
I don't have videos of myself because I'm a student and don't feel ready for it yet.

And I think it's also worrying that you, being a psychology teacher, diagnose people based on a few sentences they write as comment on a video. As someone with a lot of experience in this field, you should know you can't diagnose people like that. What if your psychology students read it and think "well, my teacher does it like this, so it must be a way to practice psychology". I think, as a teacher, you have a certain responsibility.
