So this turned into one of those rabbit holes, where you think "It's just one little YouTube clip" and then...
Katy (Kitty, Keti) Vintage Bellydance
From the 1949 film "The Egyptian Effendi"
WHAT ARE YOU DOING, KATY? Put the front of your skirt DOWN, please.
So I noticed someone asked for the name of the song in the comments. Probably because it sounds so familiar.
Apparently, Katy is lip syncing to Afaf Attiya singing "Hatouli wabour al hari'a" here, but about 8 years later, Faiza Ahmed recorded another version of it that became a bit more famous.
هاتولي وابور الحريقة - الكروانة / فايزة احمد
But it gets weirder. In 1957, Faiza Ahmed sang the song "Asmar ya asmarani" in the film "al Wisada al khalia."
أسمر يا أسمراني - فايزة أحمد
She expected it to be a hit, at least until somebody else in the movie got the same idea to record and release the song, namely Abdel Halim Hafez.
Abdel Halim Hafez - Asmar Ya Asmarany | عبد الحليم حافظ - أسمر يا أسمراني
So Faiza decided the best way to retaliate was to take an old song he had just reworked for his upcoming movie "Shari'a al hob" and release her version of it as a satirical dig.
عبد الحليم حافظ اغنية (قولوله الحقيقه)... من فيلم شارع الحب
But today, we still think of that song as "Ouloulou," so, sorry, Faiza. Mohammed Abdel Wahab called your voice "broken crystal." Riyad al Sunbati called you the "sweetest person to pronounce the letter H." Umm Kalthoum called you "the only female voice she heard with ecstasy." And you still got pwned by Abdel Halim Hafez. Twice.
