It's just ugly, disgusting. I really userd to like Sadie, she's a great dancer, I can't believe she needs to do that...
EWWW!!!

I don't like it either. To put it politely, it's not my style. And I think she has too much talent to stoop to doing this kind of stuff.

Oh dear.

That video wasn't bad compared to other ones I came across. "To each their own" UNLESS it affects everyone. In this case, it hurts to see them do this because their representing a whole union of women who dance for the art and dance to break these stereotypes... It doesn't help that now more men are going to look at me the wrong way... You know? The title "Belly dancer" should not become taboo.

I couldn't agree with all of you more. After about 1:10 I exited out of the vid. First the music was abyssmal (ok, I admit I'm not a rap fan, especially the more modern version it) and; second the dancing and overall portrayal of women (at least in the artists culture or as he is demonstrating to those youngsters who would watch this stuff) was terribly untasteful and delivered a very poor message.

When I compare this to the vids that were in another post of the little girls doing the belly dance competition and realize that this is what their peers are going to associate with the art of belly dance they've chosen to persue it makes me angry. :)

This rap video pales in comparison to the time that Sadie appeared on Taxicab Confessions..you can find the video on youtube..but you dont want to watch..and to think I used to think kaya was the pornoish one.. was I wrong! Her name is Sadie Mae in the video..with his AGT having them on TV..they are the last dancers that should represent bd! I am not a prude but I do not want the art to suffer because of it.

Thank you Punko, for understanding! I would love to see it doesn't hurt us, but I get tired of explaining to clients that yes, I leave my clothes on during a performance. sigh.

Shocking, wasn't it! It's stuff like this that destroys the positive image of bellydance that takes such a long time to build, and this blows it out of the water in five minutes. :shok:

Wow. That's... vulgar.

I discovered BD accidently through Youtube- if this was the first BD video I stumbled upon, I would have never searched into it. I would have assumed it was a sexy titillating dance done for men- harem style, which is something I have no interest in.

I don't know these women personally (and am guessing that several of them aren't actual belly dancers) but I think that sometimes, when people get the opportunity for a bit of money and/or fame, their judgment becomes impaired.

Sadie is a great dancer but she's not the smartest.

This is gross and an insult to the belly dance as an artform and the whole community, seriously.

When you are hired for a job, don't know the specs yet, you probably would do what you are asked unless it's something really repulsive and illegal to ask for. I've only been here less than a week and the main thing that is surprising me is that in a belly dance forum, there has to be a great number of exotic dancers. That was the reason the dance was originally created for. It shouldn't be a surprise to see belly dance used in this way.

I would like to be conservative because it's my taste. I just think the exotic ethnic styles are really cool, I'm not trying ever to be a professional, but if I were, if I took a job and started demanding what I could do or what I couldn't do, they would send me on my way. What things look like after production, directing, and arrangment can be totally unexpected from what you thought you were doing. I'll bet the whole shoot didn't last but 2 or 3 hours, mostly in dress up.

Don't forget these are younger woman, don't know if they are married, but if they are single, fancy free, an offer like this would be nothing but fun and travel paid for. They probably go home and listen to that kind of music, I think maybe people are reading too much into it.

No, not at all. WE decide what we dance and for whom. There are entire threads on the business of professional dance. Read through them before you decide what we do and don't do.

Please stop saying things like this. You are grossly misinformed about this dance and the people who do it.

I'm not trying ever to be a professional, but if I were, if I took a job and started demanding what I could do or what I couldn't do, they would send me on my way.

Please understand that some of us ARE professionals, or at least perform professionally, and you have a really skewed view of what we do.

The pair, known as Groove du Monde know EXACTLY what they are doing. You do not have enough information on them to make a judgment on their intent. Sadie is no innocent bunny, and neither of them are THAT young. They know what they are doing, and they know that sex sells. I don't think by themselves they really try to oversex their performances, but taken as a pair, they are way over the top and have been for several years.

ROFLMAO shortly before I broke into slightly hysterical tears.

S. Willow, I am so glad you found this forum so that we have the honor of educating you about belly dancers, what we are, what we do, and what we don't do.

I'm not trying ever to be a professional, but if I were, if I took a job and started demanding what I could do or what I couldn't do, they would send me on my way.

As a professional dancer, I never agreed to giving a questionable performance just because I was afraid of being sent on my way. Faced with such a demand, I walked and the prospective employer did not get a second chance to hire me. No bill was ever so overdue that I was willing to risk life, limb, or reputation to pay it.

I think Sadie and Kaya are damned smart ladies who know just what they want and how to get it. I'm not keen on their dance styles, but as canny business women who know how to package what they've got to sell- wow.

Absolutely no way , if hired to dance I would know exactly what I am doing and would spell it out in very precise words (written & verbal) what my terms are and that I will dance for whatever agreed up[on time, nothing & nothing less, I would also expect that audience/customers /patrons be kept under control - there will be no touching of this dancer unless they want to go flying across the room. Belly dancers are NOT exotic dancers:naghty: - I really do think you should be doing a lot more research and educating yourself as to what belly dancers are and aren't

As has been pointed out they are not that young, in their 30s I believe, they have been dancing for quite a few years at one stage they were also teaching, they may still be, I don't know, but I for one would not be paying them for any sort of lessons that for sure! I personally think they enjoy the notoriety & being the astute business women they are they make sure they make money from it. I really don't believe they have any great depth to their understanding of culture or history and that plays a BIG part in this dance.

Yep. These days I am very picky about which jobs I accept - and like you I too gave up a profitable little earner rather than accept the expectations of the slimeball owner.

I'm wondering if Ms Willow is a troll - because quite a few people have already told her on another thread that belly dance is not exotic dance - and she starts it all up again. Does she want to learn - or just get a rise? WTF
:D

WTF indeed. I'm wondering that too. Is it time for a mass "ignore" ?
