Welcome, Madeleine! How lovely of you to join us. If you'd like to share more about your style preferences, etc., I'd love to listen.

Hi Daimona, Thank-you for your warm welcome. I am so happy to have found this forum. I started teaching belly dancing when I was in my twenties and ran a very successful studio. I love this dance. I studied with Serena (who didn't) and also with Ibrahim Farrah. I currently live in Jersey City and found a beautiful studio for rent and I am trying to put together enough people to do a belly dance workshop.

Welcome indeed! I never had the honor of studying with Serena, but one of the teachers from her school helped me out with a veil trick one time - over the phone!

Hi Zorba, Thank-you for your warm welcome, I appreciate it. Most people don't understand this passion for belly dancing. I am happy to have found this site with people who know how great it is. Serena was one of those people who embraced everybody and her greatest joy was to share this dance. After I studied with her, I also taught at her school and then opened my own studio where I taught belly dancing and yoga. I live in Jersey City, just found a beautiful studio and am trying to organize a workshop. The people in JC are clueless about bd. They think it's about losing weight. Arghhhhhh!

Isn't everything in life about losing weight? ;)

We used to have a professional dancer from New Jersey here- couple of them, in fact. Gia? Gina? My mind is drawing a blank though I bought a great skirt and matching harem pants from her that I sold years later for the same price I paid. I think Tarik Sultan is also from New Jersey. (Scurries off to check.) Yep, he's apparently still active in Jersey City. Tarik's site

Yea, that would have been Gia - she's retired from the dance now. I haven't heard from Tarik in a few years.

Or they think it's strip tease. Welcome to the forum. You have an impressive background.

I always enjoyed Gia. So many interesting people have retired and disappeared from OD over the years. (Wistful sigh.)
Yea, she's an interesting person. She helped me considerably back when I got my "tramp stamp" years back, telling me how to deal with the pain, etc, etc.

I hadn't heard he was OUT of "the business". I was able to take a workshop with him, followed by a private. Very good teacher!

I know he took a brief vacation but within the last year I heard he's full into the scene again. He is so good.
