My 21st belly dance birthday

The belly dancer in me has all grown up, 21 years now. I started taking classes in late august '93. That a crazy long time ago haha! The first two classes were 2 hour workshops after which I joined the teachers regular classes. The workshops were part of my university's introduction week, they had all sorts of workshops and fun things planned, the teacher happened to have two belly dance workshops, I loved that so much I did them both :)

Here are some pictures of my first solo performance, haha the slipping hip scarf and the gold lamé!

Yes 'lame' costume was made by me haha (one of my TPBDC's!) It was inspired by a Mona Said costume but it didn't work out how I wanted it. I should have pinned the scarf, I actually put an elastic and hooks in it because it generally kept falling off but even that didn't help with the slippery lame material.

ETA: this costume, but I wanted mine to be not that revealing and Mona's costume isn't made of stiff fabric but a liquid kind of fabric, so that's why mine just worked out that bad

Cant find the YouTube tags, so here is the link:

Thank you, I did eventually find a really good use for the lamé skirt, I started using it under a chiffon one:

my teacher had great lamé circle skirts, they were much better than mine, mine wasn't a circle one and that's where I made the mistake.

This was my very first costume, I made it for our first student performance, which was an end of year sort of thing. I still cringe when I see the costume haha.

the inspiration came from pictures that my grandfather took of belly dancers in Egypt in the 60's, I don't have a picture handy right now, but here is another one he took of a dancer with a vaguely similar costume: http://bellydanceforums.net/album.php?albumid=523&attachmentid=8742
The one it was inspired by was much more floofy in the skirt, heaps of chiffon. My mistake was that the chiffon I got was too stiff :( and the beading plastic... Oh the beginner mistakes haha

Wow, 21 years is a rather significant experience! Happy dance-anniversary!!! You deserve a cupcake... or actually, a whole cake!
