Got back from JOY last night. As usual a very good day and an amazing show with great variety. Khaled on form, and Sara Farouk had a beautiful costume which I suspect is an Eman but could be a Mandy. Meissoun from Switzerland did a great Bollywood piece and Lulu Sabongi had amazing energy and an equally amazing costume on. Tracey Gibbs wore a lovely blue Eman and managed to dance a veil piece despite an injured wrist. The 400 Roses did a medieval type dance with great costuming. Lorna Gow was on form too, and did a great set. I missed most of the second half of the show, but what I saw was very good. I did a Polynesian set with two of my students, and despite a very slippery stage floor and nerves, we got through it with minor hitches only. But then JOY is always a good event with affordable workshops and a nice friendly vibe.

I was bloody knackered when I got in!

I am going to make an all out effort to book that one with Camelia... I thought Lulu Sabongi was ace.... so much energy and she didn't even seem to break a sweat...!

oh, and Wendy Marlett was ace too. That's the first time I've seen her dance. She did some really nice moves. I can't think of who else danced.....

I missed Fereshti.

I do wish Mandy would get the show filmed.....

My dear computer won't handle all the stills taken . I need to chop stuff from the album but soon I shold have the pics for Mandy. a..all being well
I throughly enjoyed my workshops but I am exhausted...just getting too old for all this. maybe the young lady who told me 25 was too old to belly dance was right!
Khaled technically superb in performance and his moves so good to follow in workshop.
Lulu amazing energy in performance and sharp and elegant teaching.
The lovely Maria (er why didn't you perform, sob..) nearly killed me with a high energy choreo.
Lorna Gow..lovely modern performance especially the drumming with Ginger and a really useful, excellent workshop.
Then Sara.her elegant and moving dancing always blows me a away..I wanna be her when I grow up and what a way to end the festival.Graveyard shift it may have been but what fun and what a lot of learning .
An entertaining and varied show..Apart from Sara and Lorna, I enjoyed Feresteh's stick and the tribal trio..must be stick-attraction.

yes have booked for October but I have shaved an hour or so off! Camelia, Anne, Tracy ,Ogden,Turkish line dancing and Houda , Moroccan Shaabi (the latter 2 being an hour but then I can't see them being relaxing.)

Thanks to everyone for coming to JoY, hope to see you all back in October.

Sorry - I do not film the show because I think the show should be enjoyed live. A big thanks to all that danced, they all did a wonderful job despite the stage floor being really bad.
I should explain why the stage floor is like it is. The Victoria Hall have had a organ given worth 850 thousand pounds which is has been installed under the stage but the work on the stage floor was not finished, hope the work will be done by the next JoY!

Lulu really enjoyed herself & hopefully she will be back in 2010.
How much energy does this lady have. Lulu is a mother to 5 children & her youngest is only 6 months old. Lulu was teachng Samba in the disco before she performed on Saturday, she even went for a walk between workshops on the Sunday.

Sara's costume was an Eman I think, but Traceys costume was a shimmy shop.

It will be JoY's 5th birthday festival in October. Hope to see you there!

yes, I wondered why Maria didn't dance, as she's so good and very popular. I didn't get a chance to chat to her, as I didn't see at all on the Sat. In fact I hardly saw anyone during the day, and spoke to most people on my way out of the show on Sat as I was leaving ....typical. Thanks Liz for retrieving my tassel!:D

:shok:

I had a great time and have learned so much (and owww my thighs hurt). Definitely worth the long journey for me. And it was lovely to meet Liz and Caroline. <waves>

I thought I'd overdone it booking 3 for Sunday and might be skulking out of the last one early. No way - Sara's folklore workshop :shok: , fascinating stuff, talk about finishing on an up. Now why would anyone want want to take belly dance away from all that? it's all so much richer for learning some background.

Misunderstanding with Maria. I try to limit performers to 5 minutes because I need the show to finish by 11pm. Maria asked me for a little longer but she never got my email to say it was alright so she did not think she was performing, so did not bring a costume.

One of our JoY teachers suggested it might be an idea to start the Sunday workshops slightly later. May be at 10.30am or 11.00am but this would mean the last workshop on Sunday would not finish till 5.00pm or 5.30pm.

Just wondered what people think about this idea
For the locals it wouldn't cause too much of a problem I do not think but those people that live further away might not like staying later.

The souk could still open at 10.00am on Sunday for those who would not like extra time in bed.

Hi Mandy, It is definately better for those of us who have a longer journey to start at 10 and finish earlier... though if there was only half an hour difference it wouldnt put me off!

I was staying over towards Leeds and the first bus didn't get there till after 10 on Sunday morning. But maybe I was just on the wrong bus route and others start earlier!

I think 10 am is late enough. Reminder to me..leave more time for shopping! ;)
remember when you emerge all the shops are shut!

But I love my funky red pants from Shimmy shop and my private students I had tonight want some!

PS Mandy photos downloaded at last...note the time. I have to finish editing tomorrow. Will send you some by email and post them here and send you a CD asap.
