Is my avatar's costume makeable?

Hello Everyone....

I am wondering if the costume depicted by my avatar is something that can actually be made. (There are larger pictures in my profile.) I think most of it can but the collar has me wondering. I would think, though, that a collar like that would chafe the back of one's neck. I would also have to ditch the stiletto boots for something more reasonable. Anyway, I though it would be fun to try to make it. I'm open to suggestions.

Thank you all in advance,

Ælfscine

I'm sure that cosplayers can find a way, although I definitely would catagorise that one as a TPBDC if I saw it on a dancer.

Some additional information about the costume.

Hello Darshiva...

The costume is the invention of Inginio Straffi for his animated series The Winx Club. Additional pictures may be found at the following.

Disenchantix - Winx Club Wiki

This includes Icy (high ponytail) and her two sisters Darcy (brunette) and Stormy (thundercloud hair) in similar costumes.

It is said that Sr. Straffi consulted with a lot of Italian high-fashion designers while creating costumes and fashions for his characters. This leads me to believe that these costumes could actually be made. I would have to add a back piece though because I have a lot of scars from my mid-back to my buttocks from surgeries on my hips. That could be attached from the bra to the bottom I think twithout detracting from it. And yes, it would be a thought-provoking belly dance costume but really hot if I could carry it off.

Thank you for your input,

Ælfscine

What style of dance would you be planning to do in that costume? Looks like a fusion costume. Please wear more skirt if you are going to be belly dancing in it. I recently saw a photo of a dancer from the '70s with some fabric that would be cool for something like this. If you are FB you can see it here (I don't know what the fabric is called, though, or if it is still available) https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10151963921432137&set=o.251056103207&type=1&theater

I am sure it could be made, but it wouldn't really work as a bellydance costume. Are you planning to use it for dance? This wouldn't generally be considered appropriate for bellydance, but it would probably be fine as a con costume or other adult cosplay.

I would recommend asking your question on cosplay boards as they have more experience with creating real life versions of fictional costumes.

A BD costume for fusion dancing

Hi Dunyah...

Thank you for your advice and the reference to the FB picture.

If I make the costume at all, it will be for performing some kind of upper-body fusion (Is that the proper term?). I have little movements in my hips so when I "dance" I will be seated on a stool with some additional side support. I will, however, add more to the bottom although I think that much of the "about to fall off" illusion :shok: comes from the artist's exaggerations. My brother, Ælfstangard, thinks that if I also learn to become a "killer ziller" that would help focus eyes to my upper body as well. (It's wonderful to have a brother who is so supportive, eh? :D )

I once had hair down to my hips. I could easily grow it that long again but I think that that high ponytail would pull mercilessly on my scalp also I am thinking that a high ponytail might be just in the way. I shall let you who have more experience tell me one way or another. As for the makeup, I rather like the witchy nasty-lady look. There will always be some that do and some that don't. I shall have to experiment with different variations.

Well, I have yet to take my first dancing lesson so the need for a costume is still somewhat in the future. It is fun, though, to think about what I could have in my wardrobe for when that time comes.

Thank you and all you others yet again,

Ælfscine

I'm not sure how this movement and artistic concept relates to belly dance. A good portion of this dance form is based in movements of the lower body and the hips.

I've designed stage costumes for several dance styles. What the dancers costume does during dance *must* facilitate the movement and flatter both the line of the dancers body and the aesthetic concept of that specific dance. Please consider waiting to design your costumes until you are familiar with the specific needs of belly dance costuming. Dance costumes are very different in nature from regular costumes. I would hate to see you waste time and money on a costume that will not work later for dancing in. For now, keep a sketch book of ideas and look at professionally designed costumes worn on dancing bodies to see how they move.

IMO Aziza of Cairo's costumes are always elegant, flattering, and tasteful.

Basically this is a cosplay (Winx, one of my favorite animated series *_*), you can do bra and shorts withb elastam fabric, the collar is sewed with bra, you can fix it on the skin with latex make up... If you want it for dancing, it's better doing the collar separate and change his design with a necklace

I'm sure it's makeable...to be quite blunt you wouldn't need to buy much fabric at all. Also craft stores sell strips of leather so you could make those arm bands.

I'm not sure why this got posted in dance costumes, though...I would discourage you from using this costume in any bellydance context, as it is extremely innapropriate.

Oh! Well, you should probably wait a while, then. You might be surprised, there's quite a lot to learn about costuming design and history. Be patient with it, and learn from your teachers what is appropriate.

For traditional bedlah costumes, take inspiration from designers. There are some listed at this page: Belly Dance Costumes | Belly Dance Store.com: Designer Egyptian Costumes at Affordable Prices

Fusion uses the same 2 piece costume format, usually, and covers just as much skin, but uses different materials and usually darker, more earthy tones.

Hello Samsara...

Thank you for your tips for the costume. I have loved the Winx Club since it first came out. I have all the Italian discs up to season 4. My brother Aelfstangard and I have written fanfictions about the Winx for almost as long. The link to my stories is in my profile and there is a link there to Aelfstangard's stories as well. I hope that you will take time to read and enjoy them and leave me some commentaries there.

I guess to continue this, though, we should move to private mail so we do not upset the powers that be.

I suppose I must be one of the Powers That Be, since Amulya and I moderate this sub-forum. :D

I've decided to move this thread to Off Topic since it is more about anime and fantasy than belly dance costume. You may continue the conversation there without a single fear of upsetting us Costume Powers. ;)

Wow, I'll read it for sure! I want give you an advice (as did the girls before me), don't use this costume for dancing.
When I dance with my bellydance bedlah (a sharqi type with looooong skirt), some people thinks that I'm a strip tease dancer (there is a lot of ignorance ) and Icy's outfit is very stripped (naked? I don't remember the right adjective, sorry ), so you can give the wrong impression about bellydancing ;)

Is "revealing" the word you're looking for? ;) I just now noticed that you're from Italy (or I think I might have forgotten, my memory is terrible! ). I haven't watched The Winx Club, but I'm guessing it originated from Italy?

Yes, "revealing" is the right adjective! Yeah, Winx Club is from Italy, one of the best animated series for girls from my country, I've watched it when I was a teenager and continue to follow now, it's cute :3

Hi Farash....

The Winx Club is in its 5th season and is on Nickelodeon at 3:00 pm EST on weekdays and at 8:00 am on Saturdays. You can also view full episodes -- both in English and Italian -- on Youtube. You may want to check out Winx Club Official Site to familiarize youself with the storyline.

Hi Samsara...

I understand now how Icy’s costume would be inappropriate for belly dancing. I think that only Icy herself would be able to do belly dance hip rotations in it without the bottoms falling off. :shok: I would still like to make it anyway and perhaps wear it at the 2013 Comicon in Ottawa. I doubt that many here even know about the Winx but it may be fun to keep them guessing. :D

I hope you will enjoy our Winx Club stories. Most of our stories come from the Witches' camp and we tried to show that even among them there is both good and evil.

Chop off my head?

Ha! Ha! I guess it would be funny unless her intention is to use that scimitar to chop off my head. :shok:

### Ælfscine mutates into a ferret-like creature then runs to hide under the couch. "Is she gone yet?"

I like animation too. I was at the International Animation Festival held here in Ottawa and enjoyed it. Had things gone slightly differently, I might have become an animator. As it is, I might start writing scripts for stories that could be animated. Well, maybe in another forty years after I retire.

Meanwhile, I have a term paper to write which is due by the end of March. I thought of doing one: "Musculature, muscle groups and their interaction as applied to belly dancing." I don't know if anyone has ever done a paper on it before but it should make for interesting reading. If a get good marks for it, I might post it here for all of you to read.
