But Reen,

See it from another point of view.. I am posing questions here.. if we complain about people percieving us as prostitutes then why point the fingers at others and do the same, how does that help?

Only those that wear too little??? That even us, dancers, who are used to seeing bedlah go.... nooooo...... she's almost naked...What then the GP would say??

No amount of us covering our stomachs, arms, and education everyone we know about the dance and busting the myths will help, one of such dancers in the spotlight and we all are called 'whores'... :(:(:(

Dancing in general is a way of selling sex..yes or no?

No, to me dancing is expressing joy of life. Child dancing is selling sex??? :shok::shok::shok:

Just because someone dances in a nightclub does not automatically mean they sell sex.. just because someone is in a five star does not mean they dont.. get my point?

Agree with that. Unfortunately in some cases it is the class of 'clients' that differ. Although I would hope that for some it gives freedom NOT to have to do this any more, even if that was their past.

we are splitting hairs over costuming, Belly dance wear in general is designed to be sexy and provocative..dont you think?

I am really playing devil's advocate here in this thread so, the Ouled nail, the Ghawazee were well know for what? ..just dancing? ..no, of course not.

Suraya Hilal tried to squeeze the primal urges out of ME dance and what did she end up with? something quite vulgar and tasteless in other ways (in my opinion of course).

No, to me dancing is expressing joy of life. Child dancing is selling sex??? :shok::shok::shok:

oops, I worded that wrong! lol
I mean advertising ourselves as sexual beings amongst other things. Children imitate adults..monkey see monekey do. Why do you think many people have a problem with kids dressing up in belly dance outfits? In the ME they think it is cute until a girl reaches puberty and then the whole thing is treated quite differently.

Belly dance when performed by people from the ME is very flirty and I would argue this til the cows come home..(as we say in the UK).

'class' has one hell of an influence over how we perceive everything from prostitution to murder..it is fundamentally wrong.

would you like to share with us

how this "name" was called upon you? of course it is horrible, but on the other hand, it shows that the person who said that, hm... he/she has issues to solve with his/her life... it is not big deal, however!

Remember and have fun:

a) women who do not marry are called spinsters or whores. There is no middle way if you do not want to be ypandros=[greek word for married]under (the power of) a man
b) women who achieve many things in their lives are called bitches (at least) or whores (esp. if they are beautiful) ("i wonder how many she has slept with till she achieved to be where she is")
c) women who do not accept being with a silly man (and they are so many nowadays) and break up for being able to find another one, they are called whores
d) women who use their body in any setting (esp. dancers of any type of dance, but also women who are confortable with their bodies even when they walk) are called whores ("you see her? it is obvious, from the way she moves, that she has slept with half the town")
e) women who are open-minded and do not criticise other women, esp. for the latters' achievements or personal lives, are called whores ("it is obvious that she does the same things, this is why she defends the other").

I'm so sorry, lulu...

What a rude person that was. Nobody has to like belly dancing. Nobody has to like it that you belly dance....but that doesn't give them license to talk to you like that.

Sometimes, for people who are soooooooo

silly, there is no point to spend time to educate them!

I also laugh at the question! i can imagine how empty his head might be that there was no other brain connection in the mean-space but to connect dance from one side to "whore" on the other...

The only answer he would understand would be something like "well, honey, even if was, you could not afford me!" if not answering at all.
