Costume Malfunction.. Yah!

LOL so I've almost fallen while performing. I've fallen while performing (twice.. YAH ME lol), and finally I had the "Costume malfunction".

So I performed at a cancer awareness fundraiser last night and woke up yesterday morning to find that my newly finished mermaid fin/skirt had been "christened" (aka urinated on) by one of our cats....:shok:

So with 3 hours before I had to leave for event (still having to shower, and pack as I had a gig the following afternoon and was staying at a friends last night) I now also had to come up with new music since I am convinced that "Under the sea" from the little mermaid soundtrack would only work with my mermaid costume. Yes I am a last minute/improv dancer so that wasn't a huge deal, I was just more so bummed about not getting to do the mermaid peice AGAIN. The first time I was supposed to perform it the rest of the supplies to finish the costume were lost in the mail so I couldn't finish it on time, and then this...BOOOO HISS. Oh well I figure that third time is the charm and NEXT time I get the opportunity all will go well.

Okay I am digressing.. back on track! lol
SoI still wanted something that looked tropical/beachy/etc. So I opted for my so called "Buttercream" costume with an Aqua skirt. Well, I hadn't tried the bra on since the last time I had danced in it and once I got to the event it appeared that the straps had stretched and kept slipping off of my shoulder, which was annoying but not terrifying since a month or so ago I decided it would be a good idea to put clear bra straps under my costume straps just in case one day a strap breaks of comes off.... I'm happy I did as that possibility of a strap breaking off happened last night.

Thank you clear straps:pray:

I like your dancing style: so energetic and happy! I am always afraid for costume malfunctions! I admire dancers who can deal with it well!

I think I need to copy the idea of using clear bra straps too, even though I've experienced that clear straps may break as well.

Miss Vega,

Nylon thread helps with costume parts being hand-sewed together - i use the same thread on everything, even on sequins and any adornments. It cannot be broken, but only cut with a scissors. So,

However, i think that the video is great and that your courage and sense of humour as a dancer is an inspiration to us all! Rep to you for using a costume malfunction as a prop!

I sew matching ribbon ties on my neck straps, as high as I can, just below the neck and this stops straps slipping. If you have long hair it's hardly noticeable. I feel more secure this way! I've never (yet) had them come untied. It's funny how some straps are more inclined to slip than others. :D

Love the dancing by the way.

One REALLY fast cure for slipping straps is to take a broken necklace or piece of chain and two safety pins, then pin the chain to the straps (On the inside of the straps) in between your shoulder blades. No sewing, moveable from costume to costume, and more comfortable than a halter! ;)

BTW, I still love watching you dance, dear!

Love how you turned a wardrobe malfunction into a prop!

Btw, my parrot was singing with your music. He doesn't do that with most belly dance vids I watch so I guess he approved of your choices. LOL

LOL! The fact that your parrot sang along to the music made my day! He sounds like quite the little personality:)

And thank you everyone for the kind comments and also for the various great tips and advice on bra straps. GREATLY appreciated:pray::clap:

While I wouldn't wish a costume malfunction on anyone this is a pretty good thread to share various stories of "Oops" costume moments. I am sure there are some of you that have some:think:

Good idea! A costume malfunction and how to deal with it is sort of like "making your bones" in performance experience!

Oh no. My costume got weed on by my cat, too. I did manage to wash it out but the dye ran and now my white bits are greyish.

As usual you pulled it off with style and humour.

You already know what I think about the cat peeing on your costume and what I thought of the performance, so I won't repeat it here.

Here's one of my favorite costume malfunction videos:

Lesson from Cassandra's video: If your bra strap falls off, turn it into a prop.
Lesson from Lulu's video: if you see a dancer's bra come unhooked during her performance (and it's not on a raised stage), rush over and help!

HAHA! Thanks for sharing that video. I had not seen that video before. I love how it took 3 women to make it functional again. As a side note her dancing was lovely and I really like the costume, especially the "leggings" underneath. So pretty!
