Bellydancer and singer

So I'm not going to say much simply because the singer/dancer in the video is a mutual friend of dance friends of mine so to each their own. I have to say that it surprised me and isn't the direction I would go as a singer/dancer combination. But the video was going around on my facebook for a bit so I thought I would share.

Will be interesting to see how people feels this represents the dance. I can see several sides how some would think it was harmless, some would be offended and some just plain won't like it. Not 100% sure where I stand, plus I just don't want to offend anyone or be hurtful in anyway. However I think when dancers with actual training decide to make a move like this it will end up being a discussion topic.

I was thinking it was not a bad considering all the lousy portrayals of dancers in current videos - until it got to the end and they started rubbing gold paint onto her belly.
:shok:  :wall:

 Well, with technological advances in the media, I can't say I'm surprised by this, but I would be very disappointed to see bellydance reduced to just becoming another template for the kind of music videos that titillate the male population. :( After all the hard work we as dancers do to uplift the art of bellydance, I feel like this is taking a few steps back, regardless if the female singer/dancer is the empowered character in the vid.

As for just mixing singing with bellydance, I'm not too sure about that one, either. However, I think I remember seeing a rather good YouTube vid that features a bellydancer singing, but it was an onstage performance, live audience and all. I'd have to look it up.

Yeah, the gold paint rubbing and the cruch grabbing wasn't appealing even though it's standard music clip stuff.

I will watch this over the Sadie video any day. Is it my cup of tea? Not so much, but as others have said, given the state of portrayal in other videos, I'll take this one. She's a good dancer, with tasteful costumes and very much sends the message that she's not just cheap entertainment.

LOL Ughhhh now I'll have that song stuck in my head for at least 24 hours...

I know! Did you have to Shanazel? Now not only do I have "My Humps" running through my head it's doing it with the word "belly" instead.

"my belly, my belly, my lovely lady belly."

Auuugh!!!!

Well it looks pretty, nice not to just have MTV babes in bedlah . But will anyone notice the "it's not about desire" and "no I don't want to be in your video shoot" lyrics?, especially when someone is getting their belly smeared with paint?

And yeah, Humps...

This isn't so bad IMO although it sort of rates up there with "Turkish Delight" and "Move Your Belly" and even some of Shakira's acts. They are okay but somewhat campy, and not something I would use if I really wanted to be taken more seriously. However, these songs and this video are still "inside the lines" except for the gold paint part which got a little risque. I am definitely interested in how this will be critiqued by the rest of the bellydance community.
