Maybe they go there to hide from you? ;)
Maybe. I certainly won't give that site - or others like it - any credibility/legitimacy whatsoever. I've been using, programming, building, and even designing computers since long before most people had even seen one, or knew what one was. I was online before the Internet became accessible like it is now - dial up BBS systems. Blah, blah, blah... So-called "Social Media" ain't it - and is avoided like the plague by most IT types; "We know better".

My advice is - if you're on such sites - get the Hell off and stay off. And get rid of that smartphone while you're at it.

Sorry for the rant - or maybe not. I'm a grumpy old man - but I don't understand why people subject themselves to this kind of nonsense. Everybody knows what (at least some of) the problems are, yet they persist...

Overall, I agree with you, Zorba. I have a FB account because I'm required to keep up the museum FB account, and in order to do that, I had to open a personal account. It isn't in my name nor is the email address I made up for it. Those belong to the stuffed lynx in the museum. When I opened it almost 8 years ago, I cruised around for a while. Having no desire to read through pages of other people ranting about perceived slights and expounding on political agendas, I quietly withdrew. Some forums aren't much better. I disengaged from a popular writing forum because it is overrun by people who are more concerned with political agendas than with writing. Do you know that there are "sensitivity editors" who specialize in editing manuscripts for anything that might be offensive to someone somewhere?

I'm not surprised re "Sensitivity editors" - but that could engender yet another rant on my part! My one sentence summary on that subject: "I'm sorry I haven't offended you yet. Please don't give up hope, I'll get to you eventually."

Had a very interesting chat with an Internet security guru a few years back who validated my thinking on the subject of "social media" - and I learned a LOT more as well. Its far worse than most people even dream - and the privacy aspect is the LEAST of my dislike of these sites. But this guy said, "If you absolutely MUST be on these sites, LIE! Reveal NOTHING. Fake name, fake DOB, fake address, fake EVERYTHING. Just be consistent."

Several years ago, I attended the Crimes Against Women Conference held in Dallas for law enforcement and associated professions. One of the workshops I opted to take discussed how to disappear online. Basically, it is impossible to do because sites keep updating their nosy information and one must spend a fair amount of time weekly removing that information and petitioning sites to take information down. There is no way in hell I can disappear because so many of the things I do professionally are advertised online by the organizations I'm associated with. I can, however, avoid adding information to the mix by participating in online social media under my real name and other information. Sigh. It's so stupid- all those sites and individuals devoted to tracking down every bit of available information on everyone in the world. No wonder folks have anxiety attacks- Big Brother is watching, and the rest of his family is peering over his shoulder.

Yep. My #1, iron clad rule is that I do NOT use my "real" name on publicly accessible areas of the Internet (read: nowhere but when paying for online purchases, and not always even then.) I spend a fair amount of time getting crap taken down by data aggregators as well. As a result, I'm quite hard to find via my legal name. Not impossible, but pretty hard. There's a reason FB et al insist on their real name policies, and it isn't for their user's benefit. The ancient custom of "use names" for everyday use vs. "real" names which were hidden because they give others power over you has come full circle. I'm known as "Zorba" everywhere, only my family calls me by my "real" name - which as an aside, I've detested since I was about six years old.

But privacy issues are - for me - the LEAST of the problems with these sites. I may have said this before, but FB has been a thorn in my side since about 2004 or so when some idiot there linked to my website claiming to be me. I've had that happen a few times over the years, and its something I take seriously and address aggressively. However, FB wouldn't respond to my complaint/queries, so I simply blocked links from there to my site - which would put the lie on idiots like that. That was 18 years ago, I see no particular reason to lift the ban. I reject anywhere from 1 or 2, to almost 100 links from there every damn DAY - according to my site logs. These sites were created for teenagers and that's exactly what you get: teenaged angst and DRAMA. They have zero legitimacy, less than zero credibility, and do not interest me in the slightest. The last such site I had anything whatsoever to do with was Tribe - and I didn't really care for that experience either and eventually left it. The amount of damage FB alone has done to society is incalculable - never mind the TWITS on TWITter and the rest. About the only one that makes any sense whatsoever is LinkedIn, as its more professionally oriented, but even that I don't really see the point of. Which reminds me: You want to hire me? Great - just don't expect to find me online, and if this type of snooping is required to get a job with your org, I don't want to work for you anyway! What I do off the clock and off my employer's premises isn't their business - I heartily dislike the current trend of "we own you 24/7/365" - NO! Eight hours work for eight hours pay, and the relationship ENDS THERE!

If someone wants to sell me something, or has a message to promote, they certainly will NOT reach me via so-called "Walled Gardens" (more like "Enclosed Sewers") - put up your own damn website and pay attention to it. I shouldn't have to go to ANY third party website to reach a business of any kind. Too many companies spend beaucoup bucks on a website, then proceed to ignore contact forms and emails. Some of them are Fortune 500, or even Fortune 50 companies! Yet many/most will respond to FB posts! I either just move on or if I have to, I'll call them and mention that they're ignoring their own website and LOSING BUSINESS.

Oh yea - I used to work in Academia, and there was a complete directory in my employer's website of everyone, first and last names, contact info, etc. But they also let us opt out. So I did.

It is possible. My sister was just forced to upgrade from her flip phone and she is not happy about it.
She didn't try hard enough. Flips are readily available.

As for "how to live without a smartphone" - I just don't even begin to grok the question. I live the same way I always have, not in need of an expensive luxury, yet sub-par device to live my life. I don't even see the reason for the thing's existence, much less how people "just can't live without" one.

Her phone service no longer had any models available. If that changes she's there.

For the record I love my smart phone but... the longer I have it the more I just use it like a phone. Now my husbands phone...

A flip phone? Is that what she's looking for? I have one in good condition (original packaging) in the kitchen drawer. It might still have $50 pre pay on it. She's welcome to it. Let me see if the phone number is in the box too. I'll check tomorrow morning.
