Temperature dropped well below zero last night so today's 16 degrees feels relatively moderate. Not much wind, clear sky, making it a classic, frigid January day. This time next week, it's supposed to be in the mid-forties, so I won't put away my summer clothing yet. :giggle:

It's weird here too. On Christmas Day, it was 56 degrees. On New Year's Day, we got a snowstorm. This week the weather will jump around within a 20 degree range. Is it Spring yet?

28 degrees, snow on the ground, and kinda sunny at the foot of the Rockies in Colorado. Daughter is on second day of going house to house looking for bodies after the fire. They've been working in sub-freezing temperatures and snow since Friday.

Currently 0C. Today it has been 2C with lightly falling snow, but the snow is so moist it is perfect to make firm snow balls and snow men. Went for a walk tonight, and it is like walking in a postcard. Even the thin branches are covered with snow. Heck, I'll just post a mood picture instead of badly describing things. Here you go!

That is beautiful Daimona.

It's been cold and rainy here for the last few weeks only to clear up for the New Years. Still cold but the sunset was gorgeous.

Snow here. Last night's drive from Colorado home was a challenge for about 100 miles of the trip: slick roads, falling snow, wind, large vehicles that couldn't be bothered to slow down and that blew past me so fast that I was forced to almost come to a halt because I couldn't see through the cloud of snow they blew up. Challenging. Then all of a sudden, I drove out from underneath the big storm as if I crossed some kind of line. From there home, there was some snow falling, but the roads were relatively dry and I didn't feel in imminent danger of wiping out in a ditch somewhere. 10 degrees F, snowing, and 15 mph wind right now. Hi ho, hi ho, it's off to work I go.

Might've been good had the snow arrived a day earlier to put a damper on the fire. 11 degrees here, up from -8 earlier today. Plenty of snow on the ground.

Last night it was -8 degrees about sundown and snow was piled everywhere. When Mr. Shanazel let the dogs out for a last run a few hours later, it was 45 above. Wind blowing 33 mph and melting like crazy today. Our road is going to be an unholy mess by noon, but with the wind, it might be completely dry by midnight.

The first storm of the year have just hit the shores around here. I've never seen this much warnings in the weather forecast at once.
Heavy winds, yes, but also extremely heavy rainfall causing floodings in rivers, extreme danger of avalanches, rock slides, debris avalances, debris flows and slush slides. Many landslides are expected, several with considerable consequences. The latter warning I've never seen before in this area. The next 72h will be interesting.

Goodness, Daimona, that's scary stuff. I hope you are in a relatively safe area and can weather the weather without problems. 💙

Fairly mild here, though with the usual winter wind. It was nice to drive home on dry roads Tuesday night. A week early, it was whiteout hell on an ice rink.

Thank you Shanazel. So far I'm safe, but there are more to come. New warnings are constantly being added or upgraded. Heavy rain and high temperatures combined with melting snow and ice are the most dangerous forces at the moment and the ground is simply saturated with water.

Damage reports have "poured in", and lots of roads are damaged or flooded. Thankfully, only material damages so far.

One of the main roads 1h drive from me looked like this this afternoon:

Just 12 km away, this car got in trouble earlier today. Both the driver and the passenger had to swim (!) to safety.

That road was damaged of water from a normally rather small brook.

Where the car was flooded, there is no rivers nearby. The water accumulated on that road comes from rain and melting snow nearby.

And these were just two examples. Several roads are still closed, either because they are flooded or otherwise damaged.

They say the worst part of the weather is over by now. Still a high risk of land slides and it is still windy, but temperatures have dropped slightly. Precipitation comes as slush and snow, which make a nice slippery carpet above the frozen water on the ground.

Norwegian hurricane?

Nah, this was "just" and atmospheric river hitting hard. The amount of rain and water combined with higher temperatures, melting snow and a ground saturated in water caused the biggest challenges and damages. Several places have experienced new daily precipitation records.
