When performing is there one brand that is better than another? Do the professionals just use brands available at the chemist?
I don't have much experience with make up, just usually wing it, but would it be a good idea to get some tuition in stage make up from somewhere? I went to a BD show on the weekend and you could definitely tell the difference between the more experienced people who knew how to do stage make up, and the ladies who just put on make up as normal. I think good make up is one of those things that can really make or break your on stage persona, so I want to get it right! |

I use M.A.C. eye makeup (eye shadows, pigments, glitters, shadow foundation, liner, mascara) and powder. I haven't found a pro foundation I really like yet so I use Maybelline dream mousse foundation. Other items from the drugstore I like are Revlon colorstay overtime lip color and liquid eye liner. I also have some L'Oreal H.I.P. (High Intensity Pigment) products, which I think is their weak attempt to compete with pro makeups like M.A.C. Also, a good set of high quality makeup brushes makes a HUGE difference in the effects you can create, especially with eye makeup. You just can't do anything with those little sponge applicators that come with cheap eye shadow and blushers. I have also recently become enamoured with Eye Kandy Glitter, and can't imagine doing performance makeup without it now. Quote:
There are also books and even youtube clips that provide makeup tutorials. |

I am always trying out new makeup to see what I like best. So far I try to stick with mineral based makeup. I have rosacea so some types of mosturizers and makeups will cause my skin to turn red and bumpy. I can tell you something to be cautious with! Bronzer! I am very fair skinned and thought to use a touch of bronzer on face, neck and chest to mute the glare a bit. As soon as I started sweating from dancing, I had little muddy brown rivulets streaming down my neck and chest.
Yuck! Because I sweat a fair amount, I use shadow for liner on the lower lid, use foundation sparingly and tend to use water resistant mascara. Nothing worse than having raccoon eyes after a set or two. Sedonia is right, the M.A.C. counter or the staff at a Sephora store would be great for makeup tutorials. If you're already comfortable with the basic application process and feel comfortable with some innovation, you can get inspiration from sources like doedeere's make up tutorials. Her designs are very fanciful so you will likely want to reinterpret them to suit your venue. I also have some background in theatrical makeup. I find that the creme makeup intended for use on stage is too heavy for dancing at my restaurant or on the street. That may be due at least in part to how fair my skin is. It does have excellent coverage (very thick after all) and won't easily sweat or wash off. There are books that teach the basics of theatrical makeup and I bet if you have a theatre company or two in your town you could probably get a referral to one of their makeup artists for a lesson. We have a community college in town that should offer classes in theatrical makeup and costuming (design AND construction) but that might be overkill unless you're really wanting to dig in ![]() Have fun and good luck! ![]() ~Rio~

When you a belly dancer you always want to look good, because belly dance is a sexy dance, which cautivates with the looks and more with the movement. Make Up should look natural but sexy at the same time.
I recommend to use the Loreal make up Naturalle based on your faces, is made by mineral resources and helps your skin so much! It will make you look like a doll. Once you started using a mineral based you should keep with the powder and the shadows its economical and gives you the perfect look you looking, Sexy, Wild and Classy. Yendis Online Marketing |

I disagree, actually. Most mineral makeup is not saturated enough or full-coverage enough for the stage.
