I'm glad you think it's cool . It's a potato dressed as a belly dancer.
Possibly a genuine Egyptian potato too (does this mean I haven't gone off the thread??? ) because we get a lot of imported Egyptian vegetables in this country.

Throughout the history of the world, societies tend to revive "lost" arts and traditions when a new generation decides heritage is cool again. You see it when people become dissatisfied with the spirit of the current age and look for something more interesting, more comforting, more 'spiritual," more "authentic." They tend to reject "foreign" and "modern" influences and reach back to the "good old days" of their grandparents and great-grandparents.

For instance, during the United States' hedonistic "Jazz Age" of the 1920s, there was a surge of nostalgic interest in the colonial days of the 17th century. During the same period that gave us Art Deco and speakeasies, thousands of people were furnishing their houses with stuff that was supposed to look like it came over on the Mayflower, taking up needlepoint and reviving quilting.

Which is why I have no doubt that someday younger Egyptians are going to override the attitudes of their elders and reclaim their folk dances in a big way.
I hope it happens before too much has been lost

As my in-laws would say -- "From your lips to God's ear."

There are always holdouts from the popular culture and the current trends -- people who keep the old ways and teach the young 'uns. We need to encourage these folks when we find them, if we can do it without looking like social workers or curiousity-seekers or something.

Maybe those of us who love the dance can be some of those "holdouts." So long as we recognize that it is a borrowed heritage, one that we hold in trust for others.

No, she has better costumes than me! And possibly more reliable shimmies

Big hello going out to Yasmine's Mr Potato Head

Female Daleks... now there's a thought. I didn't think there was such a thing. Maybe that's why the Daleks were all so cross - just needed a civilizing feminine influence...
