Dear Jen,
Belly dance is what is known in business as a niche market. It has great appeal for a small portion of the population. Usually the people that you see at any belly dance show are people who are interested in Middle Eastern dance or dance in general, or they are the close friends and family of dancers. From what I hear, the BDSS are most often playing now to half full houses or to other dancers who will travel a distance to see them. The last two times they have been in my area, both statements were true. In fact I was surprised at the low turn outs because I had been led to believe by Miles Copeland that they were selling out everywhere. I thought it might be just my area, but others have reported the same kinds of numbers in their areas, except for the occasional good turnout. As more people realize the basic quality of the show, less dancers seem to be supporting it.
Regards,
A'isha

It HAS to stop being about gender. Unfortunately the latest trend in Middle Eastern dance is ALL about gender. All male shows, treating males differently than females, screaming our heads off when they come on stage whether or not they are good dancers, interview columns featuring only males, feeling that we MUST include a male in a show in order for it to be politically correct, etc. I have even heard people say ridiculous stuff like males are better dancers than females. Surely I am not the ONLY one who can see this trend emerging....????? ( Though I can really understand why people do not want to speak up! I am still trying to regrow my eyebrows from the last scorching!! LOL)
Regards,
A'isha

Now, I would like very much to NOT make this about boys and girls again, so I hope people will focus on other areas of this post, like making lists of who they want to see in the new and improved BDSS!!
I think it would be at least STRANGE to hear Nessun Dorma in a female voice and Der Holle Rache in a male... but after all it is just MY opinion.....

Dear Reen,
Of course there are songs written for male and female voices or pieces but then, we choose them on more than just their gender, but also for the very quality of the voice that must manifest the essence of the song. I feel the same way about dance. We must choose dancers who manifest the essence of the dance rather than worry about size, gender, looks, age, etc. As far as the male or female voice thing, of course we would not choose a deep bass voice to sing a piece meant for the Castrati, though both are male. Nor would we want to hear Dolly Parton sing Carmen. It is the same in dance. male or female, we have to look for the spirit and essence of the dance before all else.
Regards,
A'isha

Is it me or does she strain at high notes and feel sort of shallow on others? I also feel less than impressed with Andrea Bocelli, who just seems to sing, but not to have an emotional attachment to his song. It is the work itself that suffers when we make choices based on gender alone.

A'isha
I have been followng this thread for a while and it is time for me to say something in my role as unofficial priestess of this forum(I am not sure of the title for the person that counducts ceremonies). If you don't know me, I have strarted BDPD, caronation ceremonies for memeber with 100 plus reps and VIPs, regulary involved in cyber parties, baked a lot ot cyber cakes etc..etc..just to mentions a few. I am a very modest person(blushing).

I am 200% behind this. Aisha tried to explain the above in many different ways in her posts. What ever others say, I totally understand the message behind Aisha's posts and I am behind it.

Shanazel, what a great punishment for A'isha. I am devasted just by thinking about chocolate deprivation. LOL

Now now guys, TIME TO GET BACK TO THE ORIGINAL THREAD, WHICH IS VERY INTERESTING. I am with Salome, we have so much stuff abt male, female dancing.
