Dear Jen, Belly dance is what is known in business as a niche market. It has great appeal for a small portion of the population. Usually the people that you see at any belly dance show are people who are interested in Middle Eastern dance or dance in general, or they are the close friends and family of dancers. From what I hear, the BDSS are most often playing now to half full houses or to other dancers who will travel a distance to see them. The last two times they have been in my area, both statements were true. In fact I was surprised at the low turn outs because I had been led to believe by Miles Copeland that they were selling out everywhere. I thought it might be just my area, but others have reported the same kinds of numbers in their areas, except for the occasional good turnout. As more people realize the basic quality of the show, less dancers seem to be supporting it. Regards, A'isha |

Dear Reen, Of course there are songs written for male and female voices or pieces but then, we choose them on more than just their gender, but also for the very quality of the voice that must manifest the essence of the song. I feel the same way about dance. We must choose dancers who manifest the essence of the dance rather than worry about size, gender, looks, age, etc. As far as the male or female voice thing, of course we would not choose a deep bass voice to sing a piece meant for the Castrati, though both are male. Nor would we want to hear Dolly Parton sing Carmen. It is the same in dance. male or female, we have to look for the spirit and essence of the dance before all else. Regards, A'isha |

Dear Babylonia, Now, here is a prime example of treating a person specially because she is a woman rather than a man, just as we are seeing so much the opposite in belly dance. I am no expert and I hope someone who knows more will speak out here. I am asking, just as a half way intelligent observer, can her voice really do justice to this beautiful piece of music? Is it me or does she strain at high notes and feel sort of shallow on others? I also feel less than impressed with Andrea Bocelli, who just seems to sing, but not to have an emotional attachment to his song. It is the work itself that suffers when we make choices based on gender alone. Regards, A'isha |

I am 200% behind this. Aisha tried to explain the above in many different ways in her posts. What ever others say, I totally understand the message behind Aisha's posts and I am behind it. Shanazel, what a great punishment for A'isha. I am devasted just by thinking about chocolate deprivation. LOL Now now guys, TIME TO GET BACK TO THE ORIGINAL THREAD, WHICH IS VERY INTERESTING. I am with Salome, we have so much stuff abt male, female dancing. Big Cyber Hug Janaki |
