A'isha:
Adiemus is an unusual name! It's actually a pseudo-latin word, dreamed up by Karl Jenkins, who is a composer of wonderful vocal and orchestral music. Here is the story of how he arrived at the name...Karl Jenkins - The Story of Adiemus The name actually means 'we will draw near' in latin with a different spelling. I love the music, and the meaning of it, and its 'fitted' me for a long time now. The name I finally settled on for dance is Sahar, which is from a range of languages, but in arabic means 'dawn'. I liked that because my real name is Bronwyn which means 'white breast' which actually refers to the dawn coming over the brow of a hill - and can be broadly interpreted as 'new beginnings' or 'fresh starts'. Of course, 'white breast' when you're a kid at school leads to terrible teasing!!!

Dear Adiemus, Thanks for sharing this. Bronwyn is a wonderful name also!!!!!! Wow, what an amazing and creative thing Karl Jenkins did and now I must try to find the music! As for Sahar, I named one of my students that a few years ago. Her given name is.... you guessed it, Dawn!! Regards, A'isha |

My sister always used to call me 'Brown Cow' because I have dark brown eyes so I never really liked Bronwyn as a name. It's quite unusual (Welsh) but there are a few of us around the same age as me with that name Most of the time I'm called Bronnie.
Karl Jenkins music is stunning, really awe-inspiring.

Dear Adiemus, Your sister was just jealous of your name! It is a step up from the 7th child down in our family. My mother used to call her something in French that meant "Little Pink Baby". I can't remember the French, now, but the sister right next to her could not say it and used to call her "MooMoo" instead, which stuck in the family. ( I still call her that, quite affectionately as I adore her. Her name is actually Sharon.) I had some errands to run this afternoon and went off to the nearest music store and ordered "Adiemus Vocalize", by Karl Jenkins. This is almost unbelievable, too, but I have satellite radio and on the way home the station I was listening to played a piece by him, the first I had ever heard. The music style was classical with this beautiful overlay of human vocalizations. I think the piece was called something like "Falling Leaves" or "Fall"... I was so excited to have heard it, just coming from ordering it. It was like a sign from the music gods or something!! Regards, A'isha |

Dear A'isha
Dina is a popular name at the moment in Egypt and some other Arab countries as well. I am not sure its original Arabic name as for Lucy it is definitely not Arabic origin. the Christian names you have mentioned you are correct except for Mervette I know alot of Muslim girls with that name. Sarah is a wonderful name in deed it has a biblical background in Judaism, Christianity and Islam. I love that name actually in the way it's pronounced in Arabic it's a little bit different than in English. The other names you mentioned for your kids they're all nice but they have a Saudi sound to them. Best regards |

Interesting that Mervette is also a name used my Muslimahs!! I did not not know. I think Jodette is actually a Muslimah as well, but I think her name sounds Christian. In fact, she is married to an American and one of her sons is named Tony Mohammed!! Yes, I do seem to like Saudi names. Actually, some friends of mine who are a mixed Saudi and Egyptian couple just named their baby Sarah pronounced the Arabic way. Her mom calls her Susu. We spent some time arguing about the name every day as some of us wanted Rima, some Sarah and some of us wanted Shetha. (Her Dad won, but we still love her name!!) Sarah is out of fashion right now in Saudi and in fashion in Egypt from what I hear. When I was in Cairo I met a gentleman named Mimi, and a lady named Ola. the names sounded nice and Egyptian to me. Also Amr always makes me think of Egyptians for some reason, and Sami makes me think of Jordananians!! Thank you for sharing your information with us. Regards, A'isha |

Well, my name is not really Jane. It's only a forum name. Lady Jane Grey is my silver tabby cat.
![]() One problem with a dance name is getting paid by check. My bank will not cash/deposit checks to my dance name. My real name is Welsh and would make an odd belly dance name! |
