Basically, the idea is that the clitoral hood was too tight/binding, and needs to be removed in some cases to allow normal functioning. Neither source advocated a removal of the clitoris itself (unlike the radical procedure that some US women underwent as children, discussed earlier in this thread).

I'm against female circumcision, but it seems there were at least two different surgeries, done for various reasons. I strongly doubt the veracity of medical reasons for operating on the clitoris, but I can't rule it out completely.
Yep heard of that as well-this one is sort of cosmetic surgery, not affecting normal functioning, unlike the outrageous practices described earlier.

Well you may say it is only cosmetic - but you can't mess about down there without affecting things. I thought my husband's was cosmetic with no effect on sensation etc, until he told me how he bitterly regretted it. Aparently there are men out there who attach weights to try and grow foreskin back, although I doubt they regain the loss of sensitivity. If you remove the prepuce, the end of the clitoris will hardened off and dry out and become less sensitive. Agreed this is not as bad as the extreme versions, but it still should not be done. saying it is cosmetic makes it sound harmless, instead of invasive procedure on the sexual parts of little girls.

Dear Jen,
I know someone who did the weights and he said that he did regain sensitivity. He also showed me the contraption and it involved a funnel shaped weight and tape. He said that it was painful at first, sort of like a sore muscle, but that you get used to the stretching of the foreskin after awhile. I am not sure how he knew he was more sensitive since he was circumsized as a baby, but then I do not officially own my own penis, (although I do share one with a man who is circumsized and it seems plenty sensitive to me!).
Regards,
A'isha

Well I read about it in a magazine, I think it was "Prima" or something like that. And surely it is not done to little girls( the cosmetic one). There were several stories where ladies experienced discomfort cos of excess skin- therefore the op. Obviously nothing like attacking a child with razor for some obscure reasons!!!
