The assumption by an employer that I should be so grateful to have a place to dance that I wouldn't expect to be paid, followed closely by the employer who thought my tips should cover the fee she had agreed to pay me.
And let's balance the negative with some positive, shall we? What's the best thing anyone ever said to you about dancing? One of the best complements I ever had was when a friend who'd never seen me dance ran up after a performance and gasped, "My god, Shanazel, you are really good!" She and I worked on a fencing crew together and she'd never seen me out of blue jeans and leather gloves before. ![]() |

The worst insult I’ve ever had was when I was at an open hafla, having the time of my life and dancing fairly well in my opinion, only to have another dancer come up to me and say something along the lines of “Good job. One day you’re shure to be as good as I am.”.
![]() It would have been a compliment if she were actually at least 1% better than I was. We danced at the same level! She was only as good as I was and vise-versa! ![]() The best comliment I received was on my breaking. A woman said to me it was almost mesmerizing. She was very expressive. The woman I’d looked up to in her dancing since I was little. ![]() ![]() But Shanazel has tagged the worst insult of all. The kind that can potentionally lead to lawsuit. ![]()

Worst: At a dance event a fellow dancer came up to me and gushed over my dancer friend in front of me and everyone in the room, and then turned to me and said, "Oh yeah, you were good too." in a dismissive tone. It hit hard because I knew I wasn't "on" that night and had trouble with my props.
Best: After a free Christmas recital in a nursing home a man over 100 years old said my Turkish style dance brought back wonderful memories of being stationed in Turkey and how much he loved the country and it's people. He talked my ear off for over half and hour! |

I actually just got my first compliment (in a long time) at the last student show I performed in. When another member of QoTU told me what her friend had to say, I said "Are you sure he was talking about me???" He said that my dancing was intense. No one has said anything negative to me, in my hearing, which is amazing because my first performance in a long time was really painful to watch, lol.

Negative hmm difficult. It was more indirect things like ignorant people saying cane dancing is not authentic and I should dance with an Arabic sword instead
. And if I can dance like Shakira and, concluding from a picture, I'm not bellydancing because my belly wasn't visible . Worst insult though was by this bitch... I mean ex-fellow dancer, who said just before a performance she thought I looked older than 21. (Well I'm 23 now but you get the point).Best complement, one of my teachers saying I had the same expression as some Egyptian dancer at a moment. |

30 years ago: "Western women can't belly dance, we just like to watch them because they wear thin clothes."
35 years ago (my dad): "I though you were just bumping and grinding up there in your room but this is really amazing!" |

Worst: "Heh, I bet your boyfriend likes it that you've spent so many years learning the belly dance seduction technique." I didn't even know how to react to this. I think I just walked away. Has anyone else ever heard of the "belly dance seduction technique?"
Best: (From a little girl who came running up to me after a performance): "Are you a princess?" Compliments from children always mean a lot to me, they are usually pretty unbiased. I saw this little girl and her group of friends trying to belly dance after my performance. Kids tend to be my favorite audience members. |
