Forgot to post this earlier --- found this article in the archives of Al-Ahram Weekly about what it costs to hire the top local entertainment for a wedding in Cairo. I dunno what the currency translates to, but I suspect it's a lot! Dig what dancers like Fifi get (or got, this was from 2001):

YIKES! I do not know what the amount is either, but I am guessing Fifi is quite well off doing those shows.

Don'y forget you're also paying for a full orchestra! On top of that big stars have huge costs with costumes - they change them often. One we saw in Cairo was over $10 000!

Does LE stands for Egyptian pounds? One US dollar is about 5.5 Egyptian pounds. One Euro is about 8 Egyptian pounds. So FiFi would make roughly $2200 USD or 1500 Euros. (I rounded up- silly me, I did the math on paper before I realized the calculator would do it for me. Duh.)

Dear Gang,
In the 1990s, Lucy was puling down about $25,000 a night, according to a National Geographic television special on Egypt during that time. She paid the band and her singers and do-woppers out of that, but she was still pretty darn rich. Fifi is the highest paid dancer ever, according to Al-Ahram in some article I read a few years ago. At one time, Soheir Zaki and other dancers were charged a retroactive entertainment tax of some sort and Ms. Zaki owed something like 1 million Egyptian pounds. She was not amused.
