Dear Reen,
I am not sure where this idea that belly dance is a "respectful", "dignified" art form comes from in the first place. In countries of origin it is certainly not looked upon in that way and everyone accepts that "nice" girls do not dance. In countries of origin any kind of display of the female body doing anything as sexual as belly dance is definitely not considered "respectful". It is considered sexy there and no one is afraid to say it is, though the connotation is naughty. I have found Middle Easterners are much more relaxed about it than many westerners. A few religious zealots are uptight about it; everyone else seems pretty accepting and okay with it. It's like, yes its naughty but also really fun, as forbidden fruit often is. Regards, A'isha |

Well Many people who dance do not dance in restaurants, or say for ME audience. I have seen it done on stage, as a family event.... and obviously that video is NOT family rated.
So to lump it all in one and sex-label it would be to reduce it to just one part of it. I dont know about everyone, but when I dance, I know it is much bigger than that because it expresses more my personality rather than feminity... surely i dont writhe on the floor in a revealing bra... if that makes any difference.... LOL After all the beauty of the dance is in it catering for different cultures, different tastes and yes different ways of expression.

I liked this "sexy" video more than the one where she was standing, dancing simply, and turning left all the time. It seemed...more together, somehow.
Of course, I tend to like "sexy" anyway, even if I don't dance that way myself. |

Dear Reen, Well, for one thing the differences in attitudes about sexuality do not stop it from being a dance that is performed in front of entire families in the Middle East, and certainly not where I live either, regardless of sexual content. Writhing on the floor is not what makes the dance sexual. Sexuality is an element of he dance itself, not of some action that might spill over into the "sleazy" department. I would say that the beauty of the dance relies very much n its being a portrayal of some very distinct cultural elements that get very lost out of context, and that healthy sexuality is one of them. Yeah writhing on the floor is what makes it vulgar.... not sexy....
If the dancer IS sexy than whatever she dances will be sexy... (gosh and most of us are sexy...LOL) but there is a huge GAP imho between the two....
