Here in London we have an annual event which is euphemistically described as an "adult lifestyle show"; what this actually translates into is "gigantic sex shop". You can have a day out perusing all manner of what used to called "marital aids", perhaps book yourself and your partner onto a Swingers' Holiday or maybe commission your own torture chamber. Nothing wrong with that, each to their own.

But, guess what? As part of the entertainment there's an Erotica Ball with six different rooms, including the Harem Boudoir with:

"Roxy Velvet - Bird Cage Fan Dance & Trapeze,
Sefi - Erotic Snake Performance,
Exotic Belly Dancers,
Amrita - Arabian Bondage Installation

Yes, you read it right, Arabian Bondage Installation. I feel sick.

It's because of things like that that some people think bellydance it's a "sex dance" only with the objective of turning men on. We're at the XXI century, my god! People shouldn't be that ignorant anymore. It's terrible to know that something like that still happends.

I would rather dance at a tupper ware party than the erotica ugg one. We battle to keep the name of Oriental Dance decent and wham it goes out the window with something like those shows.. yikes makes me mad

I don't see what the big deal is about this really, because its really not in the public spectacle the same way that a mainstream hollywood movie, or a restaurant/night club show is in the public eye. It's taking place at an event that is a *fantasy* adult-oriented event. You can get tied up and spanked by the naughty nurse or you can lounge in the harem room and pretend you have 10 personal concubines to belly dance and feed you peeled grapes. No one who actually attends such an even is going to be under the impression that it's a reflection of reality.

The harem room will probably one of the more tame events going on there.

Worry more about untrained and half-trained dancers performing at restaurants and state fairs and community cultural events. That is where people will really form a bad opinion of the dance.

) harem fantasy? It's got to have belly dancers. And floor cusions, shisha pipes, tented ceiling, potted palms etc etc......

IMO it's utterly pointless feeling offended about what an event like this might be doing to the good name of belly dance. It's not ABOUT belly dance. The organisers probably neither know any better nor care, and why should they? they are not presenting a dance form or trying to educate their clientele in the finer points of ME dance, they just need the fantasy to tick the right boxes.

My big question would be, what makes it Arabian bondage, as say, opposed to Greek or Tasmanian or American bondage? Does the person who is doing the binding speak to you in Arabic? Do they perhaps tie you up with shisha cords or hoses? Do they fly you to, maybe, Kuwait before tying you up? Do they have you eat dates and have some tea first, and maybe listen to a small taped concert by Talal Medah?? WHAT MAKES IT ARABIAN?????? I am dying of curiousity!!!
