Default Forgive me for I have sinned...

So today I caught myself committing one of the cardinal sins of belly dance and I felt so guilty I had to come and confess.

I was chewing gum this afternoon and then ran out to teach my class and completely forgot I even had any in my mouth until about 20 minutes in. Earlier today I was even reading the thread on the board with the "teacher" with the bad hands and the gum and thinking "oh, the horror!" Oops...

It got me thinking though, all of us at some point must have made some sort of mistake worthy of indictment by the Belly Police. What was yours?

Ok Mariam, pls repeat after me.

I, Miriam, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will never ever chew gum again when I teach bellydance class.During my time as a teacher, I will faithfully ........

My sin...

One time after I had a few drinks with friends on a friday evening, I was called to teach a class, because the regular teacher was sick. I was playing Iraqi music and taught about 15 minutes, before I realaised it this music has nothing to do with bellydance. 2 years later I found out it has lot political stuff in the lyrics

Miriam,
At least you weren't performing and chewing gum....

My sin? I am NOT a very good zil-player. I also cannot type or play the piano or do anything that requires much coordination between hands. But, not liking the sound of the tinky little zils I was using, I purchased a pair of beautiful, ringing zils and insisted on playing them. Everyone was kind enough (or too chicken to say anything to me) to not mention that my zils were very loud and I was not really on rhythm, but I eventually realized the error of my ways and put the big, pretty zils away and started playing the tinky ones again that even I can't hear when we are playing as a group. Whew.

I don't know if I have officially sinned yet... but last march for my grandmother's birthday I danced to her and well... my numerous family... hahaha.... I'm not very skilled with the zils because I haven't recieved proper instruction.... anyway... I'm so used to hear the coins of my belt when I dance, that when I played the zils I couldn't hear my hips... .and well thank gods it was a family performance and not a real one.... because I know, I felt I danced horribly ... I'm sure my grannie was happy in the end ....

Oh... and about the gum gum episode.... I hope everything turned out ok.... unless you chewed with your mouth open!!! .... kidding.... I think it can happen to any of us...

kisses.... bye

I think my 'sin' was far greater then any of yours. At the time (and still) I didn't see it as something bad, however, times have changed and it's regarded as extremely bad now. My friend and I had a performance with a little political statement in it about freedom for women. Back then the audience thought there was nothing wrong with what we did.
I don't even dare to explain what we did (no we didn't do anything indecent!), as in another forum I have been bashed to death for it once...

I hate make-up. I confess to teaching with no make-up at all (thus betraying the glamourous image of belly dance) and even performing in all my paleness with nothing more than lots of mascara, a little shadow, and some glitter one of my more determined students dumped in my hair. I know, you all are shocked beyond words and even gum-chewing pales (no pun intended) in comparison.

Shanazel and Slinks,

You will be never allowed to come and perfrom or dance in Hong Kong unless you dab a tub of green eye shadow, bottle of hair spary and glitter all over body. Have you ever seen Panda bears live??? Just imagine, panad's with green circles around the eyes!!!

Good on you guys!!! I wanna do the same, but I have few sun spots from hanging out in Bondi Beach (sydney) too much. I use makeup when I perform.
Thank god I am not in the SIN CLUB.
You lucky gals!!!

Oh, sweetie SUN SPOTS- I grew up in the south and southwest, worked and played outside for decades, and if I wanted to use make up to hide sun spots, I'd have to take a bath in the stuff.

Green eye shadow, huh? Moldy-eyed pandas, huh? Yeah, in the Spotlight dance contest that is held here each year, judges take away points for not enough body glitter. A hundred little girls with red lipstick, violet eye shadow, and glow in the dark bodies...

So what is the pass mark for body glitter? I hope they are judging fairly against an objective standard. and how do you measure it? some sort of reflectance meter?... do you correct for surface area? do you have to judge in a particular coloured lighting?

(sorry, I've had a long day at work being scientific. It'll wear off soon...)
