An interesting costume note: the fancy dancers at the powwows used to buy lids from snuff cans and twist them into little cones that they used to decorate their costumes. Gorgeous, cheap, and really neat sounding
I did that for a tribal styled belt when I first started dancing. They do make a fantastic noise and at least I got something useful out of hubby's bad habit :P

As for dances from the US I think everyone else covered the ones I can think of right now.

What a great topic! I also love watching dance, and with some dances I could look at them endlessly (like the Greek ones, the you-know-what-dance , even the Asian ones, but in their case the accompanying music kind of gets to you after a while).

The only video clip that I could locate right now of Estonian dancing is here
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lYcYy1jg3-s
danced also by the Estonian community living in the States. Considering that many of them have never even been to Estonia, they are doing a really good job dancing the folk dances. The current trend is that the dances are all choreographed like small anecdote-like stories and they are so much fun! Especially the men's dances. In my home town, we had the first ever male dance festival this summer - 2000 men on the stadium dancing folk dances at the same time!!! Can you imagine how proud that made me of my country

Maariku

PS: Can someone PLEASE fill me in on the background of Morris dancing!?

Kiddo, I think it would require some pretty serious surgery for you to be any kind of a boy . I cherish the mental image I have of you riding the moors and hedgerow lined lanes dressed in your jodphurs and chaps. Come visit me the right time of year, and I'll bet I could find you a cattle branding/castrating/dipping to attend- or at least a rodeo or three!

That was really good. I like the music and the flowy movements.

Hi all,

Nice thread! I was just reading and looking through all those clips, some sure are amazing. I liked the Balinese and Greek dances as well (lovely clip Maria!).
The Finnish one Saaraelli posted was really good too. Being Dutch I think Moon covered most of our folk dances though there must be a few others, I can't remember right now, I'll try to find out more. Birds/chicken dance annoys me lol, especially the music

Now I have a question. What is "puddle dancing"?? I heard of this yesterday and I'm curious. Does anyone know?

I think that's what kids do when it has been raining: splashing around in rain water puddles.

What a nice thread Sara….
I found this Kathak Dance Video , Kathak is one of the highly regarded classical dance forms from Northern India. Kathak dance means dance with a story, The dance always explains some kind of story, it can be mythological , historical or a fairytale.

That was very nice Dipali.

Why does my country have such stupid, boring dances?
