Mr Beveridge's Maggot I have no idea about. I get told over and over but always forget.
I'll rack my brains for yas. ![]() Got it! I realised when I heard Wildboars Maggot. 'Maggot' means like a kind of... well Whim, or up to it, sort of 'fancy' thing. It's on old English word I think, me mam says so anyways.

My burg is mostly German, so we have
polka! It's actually fun. ![]() Then there's something extremely odd called the "chicken dance." Our old people find this uproarious: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wvrk2puwtak (the above is not anyone I know, but they do a good job with it) |

Norway has a long and unbroken folk music and folk dance tradition, and there are actually a lot of young kids who dance today. I've never really danced much Norwegian folk myself, with the exception of a few classes in school.
Nice thread! I'll make sure to check out the other clips posted! Freya PS. I'm Norwegian but living in Sweden Here is a good and brief overview: http://www.culturalprofiles.org.uk/n...ile/-1223.html ------ A few video clips: With traditional costumes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fmjXhyEYLDA Halling dans: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HToYPI65PCE a god clip, however, the music is classical (by Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg) and not the actual folk music they are dancing to: http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...ian+folk+dance |

Don't forget contra dancing! It's like a cross between square dancing and line dancing...a "caller" sings out the movements, while you dance with your partner in a double-line of dancers. Trust me, it's super-fun to do. Here is a video:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=kmyjGc3rTKU And there is also clogging, which is like tap dancing. My parent's pastor clogs, as did my grandfather (before he died). The second dancer in this clip is very impressive: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_qno...elated&search= And country line dancing probably began as a modification of the 70's Electric Slide. No partner is necessary, and it's good exercise. In fact, people use it for exercise. My father's workplace offered free aerobic and line dancing classes for a while in the 90's, and the line dancing was *much* more popular than the aerobics. Currently there is a trend of seniors doing country line dancing. My mom got roped into teaching a line dance class (which she totally enjoys), and apparently there are even genre-specific musicians and conventions! I should know more about American dance; I took a whole course on it in college, but I've forgotten everything else except the "bear dance" and the hula. Oh, wait, there's also the "Big Apple", the "Charleston" and "the Shag". But the "Bear Dance", the "Big Apple", and the "Charleston" are individual dances, as opposed to dance styles. Hula is a native, highly symbolic dance style. And "Shagging" is a kind of swing dance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CaUWs63iBz0 Last edited by da Sage; 09-26-2006 at 03:28 AM. Reason: add shag video...so at least you won't have to search through the *other* kind of "shag" videos to find an example! |

Wow what a great great thread !!!!!!
I'm a wierd mix of greek-italian-austraian-moroco (grand-grandmother lol) and recently learned that another grand-grandmother was from Alexandria Egypt (but from the greek origin there). My father's island is Crete and I was in the folk group from 11 to 17, at 18 started teaching Cretan Folk till now (so around 20 years  damn i'm getting old lol). This video is from Cretans that live in States (couldnt find from greece) but its 99 % authentic (music, clothes, steps, attitude etc, non authentic is the chair thing, and the lady that throw money around) Cretan dances are for showing grace, being strong, bride, the same goes for the women also, check it out. Here the group dance "Malevizioti" a dance from apart of Crete. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1KrEijY5u1E This one is from greek tv, where a Cretan singer Mihalis Tzouanakis (he is HOT !!!! ) sings and you can see the normal people dancing. They are dancing Haniotiko Syrto and the girls are MY students ![]() Maria Aya ![]() Last edited by Maria_Aya; 09-26-2006 at 06:57 AM. Reason: adding |

They are soooo cool.
I love looking at other types of dancing. I liked the dance with the Bodhisattva hands too. That was lovely.
