Why keep saying "the West?" What everyone really means is America, so why not just say it?
And it's nonsense to state or believe that America only takes, or even takes much more from the Third World than it gives back. Come to California, see the millions of immigrants who have moved here in the last 10 years alone. In my opinion, that is giving a whole lot to the world- the words on the Statue of Liberty still apply.

Dear Gabi,
Taken as intended...I can see the humor in both the FBI and others thinking I am a bit of a terror!! And Dear Everyone, UUUUMMMmmmuuummm...Speaking of stealing things from the west and abusing them... Linda Mahboula from San Francisco sent me this Youtube flick: Http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SkkXp...search+Algeria. If this does not turn into a net address, you might also look in Youtube under Fulla- Ahl Al Maghna. You have to see this!! It's proof postive that some things just do not work together! I love the combination of yodel and mawwal.... or whatever it is, at the end!! ( May also be gargling...???) Regards, A'isha Last edited by Aisha Azar; 09-07-2006 at 09:56 PM. Reason: typos |

Hey Tarik LOL
Hi Gabi, I can understand if you don't like the concept of cultures and the World as a unified place. so can I ask:what culture are you apart of? Do you remember celebrating holidays as a child? What did you do? Who are your heroes? Every human being is part of a culture one way or another, it is unavoidable. In order to answer those questions, you address the culture for which you are apart. I recogize the beauty of globalization but I won't minimize cultural genocide no matter who does it. Hi Rico, When I discuss the "West" I'm ot talking about cowboys and Indians. Specifically, l'm referring to the social, economic and legal philosophies descended from Aristotle to the Papacy to Descartes and Nietsche. It's perspective elevates individualism over community, it's a different mind set so to speak. IMO it's no better or worse than any other ideal. It is what it is.Yasmine |

I'm the proverbial mishmash - I had a little very early Christian as in celebrate the major holidays but that's about it. I've lived all across three different countries and don't hold any culture personally precious. If I did maybe I would feel differently about it but by the same token I have a somewhat unique take on objectivity about certain aspects of it. It's the same old story - you lack some things and get a little something different for it. How do you feel about a culture keeping aspects/traditions that are not so good/useful anymore and how do you think they should be incoorporated as the culture progresses? I think this is where things get tricky. |

Hi Gabi, One of the many reasons why i like this forum is because of the interesting discussions we have with one another. My personal belief that as we change as individuals and as a society we should look at outmoded traditions that don't uphold us as human beings. Traditions that worked in the 19th century are considered criminal today. Traditions like celebrating holidays with family, taking food to the sick and respecting your elders are apart of my culture(not that everyone adheres to it), these are righteous aspects that uphold and keeps the human thread weaving through us all. Thanks for your reply.

As for the rest, I admire Aristotle, and Descartes, certainly. Nietsche took it way too far I think, and the Papacy, well, see previous "Brokeback Mountain" reference. Well put, anyway. And while I am socially liberal about many things, I like individualism, and the perception that I can still make my own destiny.

). Like they take over the ways of dressing, ways of living etc., take over maybe even ballet (and make something weird of of that ha ha, just joking). But at the same time always criticizing 'those western people'. I do understand that, because there are lots of things in the west I can imagine they don't like (I don't like it either), but at the same time they expect that western people shut up.Well, this is very very common in Holland. It happens a lot between different cultures.
