I'll try and write how I talk now. Should be fun.
Rahnd ere, wen wi see sumwun wi know, wi go 'Ey up love', or if it's a good friend, wi say, "Ars tha doin' _____ t'day" Thins ah say a lot ah "Geeus a drink" or "where's t'booze at", or... 'Put wood in t'oil", or Shut thi mahth" (usually to mi sis) When thas talking baht mines, tha'd say stuff lahk "coil" "pits" etc. Usually I only use Thi, THa, Tha'll, That'd, Thas, Tha etc, when I'm with mi mates and we forget, cause at college we get told off, or at mi grams or home. Ma fav things to say though are 'Yu lekkng?' or... "nip onto shop and geeus some sprogs/spice" (cause then I don't have to go)

Dear Demelza and Group,
What a wonderful topic!!! I have lived all over the States and in Canada ( Newfoundland) and come from French/New England people. I think I have no accent, but I guess I do occasionally elongate my vowels. I also occasionally use French words that my mother uses, like calling the elevator button "peeton", because I thought that's what they were called for many years. I don't actually even speak French at all now, though it was my first language. Shakira of Ohio says that I write very differently than I am in person. (MIles Copeland thinks the same thing.) She thinks I have much more of a sense of humor in person than comes across when I write. We roomed together in Virginia when we were teaching there together a few years ago. Demelza, you are correct in that I do try to use good pronunciation. Anatoliy has a delightful accent once he gets over being shy. He also has a very good sense of humor. Anatoliy, I recently found out our dance company's new announcer lived for some time in Siberia. She speaks Russian to my dog, because for some reason Una barks at her when she speaks English to her!! Regards, A'isha |

Until today, I spoke like a regular guy, albeit a brilliantly articulate one. However, I just found out I am a descended on the maternal side from of the lords of Northumberland, including Henry de Percy, aka Hotspur, who would have been king had Henry V not defeated him. Farther back in the same proud blood line, we are direct descendants of Louis I of France and his father, Charlemagne (It's true! Hope there is some forgotten inheritance for me, like a castle).
In light of this pedigree, I shall henceforward speak in only the loftiest courtly tones, with admixtures of Norman French- that is if I deign to speak to you at all. Zounds! Now begone! And on your way out, send in my jester and dancing maidens!

Hmmm! What sort of accent do I have?
Even though I'm a born and bred French-Canadian, I don't have much of a French accent when I speak English. Maybe some words here and there, but most of the time people think I'm native English. That's until they pay attention to my grammar which is not perfect, I know! And it's getting more and more contaminated with Dutch grammar, so that's not arranging things at all. My English accent is also quite eclectic, with Canadian/American/British pronounciations all mixed up together (tv influence, ya know!) :o |

). But that must be the Dutch television rubbing off, because there are so many american programs on tv, so from an early age you get used to the accent.Quote:
