3. They are the mundane symbol of the Navajo goddess Changing Woman and I feel kind of weird about randomly killing them when I live in the very southern end of their (the Navajos') former range. It seems like sacrilege (OK, I'm strange, I admit it).
I am a student weaver who welcomes the presence of a spider on my loom as a blessing. Lots of cultures honor Spider Woman in some form or another, and I think you are respectful, Suhad, and not strange at all.

I don't squash them - that would mean coming waaaay too close for comfort!
I actually grab a paper tissue, and put it over the spider and carry it outside where it can go about its happy webby way. Or squeak and ask my wonderful man to do the same for me!
I don't like squashing them, that's sad - although white tails eat other spiders so I feel a bit less worried about their fate.
When I was a student occupational therapist I had a bad experience with weaving - so perhaps that's the basis for my fear and loathing of spiders? We just do not hit it off, me and looms and me and spiders.

I have admired the odd garden spider that spins the wonderful webs out on a porch, but in my house they go away quickly and usually permanently. I don't think spiders are on the endangered species list, so I don't feel so bad about this.

I think what got me last night was the sheer number of spiders in one spot. eeiiii... My skin crawled for hours.

da Sage - when I first moved to Minneapolis I saw my first house centipede!! ugh! I thought I left that kind of thing behind when I left Hawai'i.

That is the common house centipede, and I saw one in my apt in Minneapolis! Yiiiiiii!

That one is the largest Hawaiian one they've found so far (well, according to them anyway. I have friends who claim to have seen bigger ones!

I usually LOVE spiders, but cane spiders were another story!

Okay I hope nobody has fainted or grossed out too much.

LOL, I was reading the opening post all squimish & creeped out waiting for the bellydance link! Hahahahaha!!!! But my skin has gone all crawly!!!

Best thing I did was buy flats that are high up in the building - had perhaps a handful of encounters in the last few year but thankfully very very few!

Just come back from a holiday in Ibiza where lizards are very common - absolutely adored the little creatures, but went absolutely mental when I nearly dried myself off on a towel with a monster spider on it (it was at least 2cm yes I'm a wimp)

Brea's post made me physically recoil & my skin keeps tingling like it thinks there be spiders nearby!

Eiiiieeyy.. Brea, I think they'd have to revive me if I saw one of those, cause I'd faint dead away. Hard to believe a spider could get that big, though when I was in Okinawa I did see one of the foot long centipedes. aiiiiyyyeeee!!!!

I'm with you, Eshta. A nice apartment high off the ground and far, far away from spiders sounds like a good thing. I had a gecko once in an apartment I lived in in Okinawa, which was cute and didn't bother me at all. I always laugh when I see commercials here for an insurance company here in the states that uses a 'Gecko' spokesperson. so cute!

When I lived on Oahu, I was bitten by one of those. I was minding my own business sleeping in my bed and I must have rolled on it. It bit me on my upper back and hung on. Pain! Middle of the night car ride to Tripler Army Medical Center to get pumped full of demerol for shock. Why do I always get bitten by stuff? I had a bear encounter a couple of weeks ago in Yellowstone Park, glad that he didn't decide I taste good too.

Jane - did you get sick from it? I've often wondered about claims that they are or are not poisonous. I think they are, but thought I'd ask about your experiences.

One way or another, though, I hear the bite can be as painful as a gunshot wound, and besides....look at that thing! Do you want it in YOUR bed?! yiiii.

They told me at the hospital that they are toxic. I went into shock and had trouble breathing with dizzyness, but I wasn't pukey sick though. I think people react differently to the bites. It hurt like heck. Also, how bad and where the bite is would make a differnce too I bet. Mostly the experience was very creepy.
