Tattoos ?

So, Zorba is going to get a tattoo for his fiftieth birthday, I am still thinking about it, well, I have thought about it and designed it, just got to find someone to apply it, (when I last had the cash, no one I asked wanted to do it, it sends the eyes funny looking at it was the excuse), that and scraping the cash together again.

So what of the rest of you here, do any of you have tattoos, and may I ask , what of ?

At last count...about 11 tattoos.
They vary from mankei nekos (traditional luck beckoning cats) that symbolize my fur kids, to a full portrait of my Chihuahua, an Aladdin's lamp on my lower hip with smoke that rises above and around my right hip...butterfly over my heart, lotus on the back of my left calf, cherry blossoms over my left hip, an ankle charm bracelet and a hamsa that covers my right foot top.
My advice to you is not just to plan the art for your ink but to also find a SUPERB artist to 'apply' it.
A novice or bad artist can lay it IN the skin in such a way that it can blur and look horrid inside of a few years.
And...take their advice...if there's a reason they don't want to ink your art...it might be for a very good reason!!!

Well, the last artist that refused said he wanted to do it in dark ink, where I wanted blue. He says it would not be prominent enough, it wouldn't be seen very well, my answer to that was the tat was for me, not others. Plus the tattooist said looking at it, it sends his eyes funny, as it appears to move. Spirals do that, they do appear to move, and my design was for an arm band made up of one line arranged into numerous two coil spirals side by side all around my arm, with no beginning and no end. I like spirals. It is an optical illusion, I designed it that way. I have seen spiral tattoo art done, so I know it can be done, just have to find the right artist.

Do go for it if it "calls" you. Research tattoo artists like crazy. Talk to everyone you see who has one in the location you want to have yours done - and/or has one similar to what you want. Find out their experiences. Find out who did it. Pretty soon, a pattern will emerge...

Also keep in mind that your Tattoo should not scab. It took me about ahh maybe 6 to figure that one out. I have: A tribal sun, destiny symbol, tribal arm band, butterfly, music note, winnie the pooh and piglet, lilly, purple flower, I think that's it. Make sure it's what you want, and you can live with it for the rest of your life. I say go for it. I want one more. Just taking my time, that one will be my last!!!

Each of my tats mean something to me and I got them at pivotal points in my life: the ladybug was when I turned 20 and no longer thought of myself as a child, but wanted to be reminded that I was still my mom's baby (she bought it for me); the butterfly in flight was when I left my mother's home and went out on my own; the tribal tattoo was when I finally got up the nerve to audition for The NDC and made it in! I became a professional "cabaret" bellydancer, but wanted to remind myself that my inner tribal girl still remained.

If you're gonna get ink, I'd just reiterate that you think long and hard and be sure that whatever you get is something you can live with and that it has meaning for you.

Gia, I remember seeing a photo of your Aladdin's lamp tattoo (that you posted probably years ago now), it's such a beautiful one.

I have 5 tattoos. In order of inking: a tibetan-style flame in the middle of my back, kanji for freedom on the back of my left ankle, alibata for salvation on my lower back (ancient filipino script), a lotus flower in water on the top of my left foot, and kanji for love on my right inner wrist.

They all have real meaning for me (e.g. i got love the day after my twin nieces were born, and they adore it now), or represent things I aspire to (everything i do with my hands i want to do with love, look within yourself for your own salvation), and also are symbols of my heritage. When what you want to get tattooed on yourself means a lot to you (and will have the same meaning to you in 50 years), you won't regret it. Also I figure if they spread out when I'm 50 I'll get them re-done, or new tattoos over them.

Also...how addicting is getting tattooed?? I'm on a bit of a hiatus now but always think about adding just one more...

Oh, that spiral bracelet design sounds beautiful, quite into spirals myself. I have two tattoos, one at the top in the middle of my back (just below my neck). It's a spiral with 3 triangles surrounding it to form one larger triangle.

The other one I have is an Ankh (Egyptian symbol for fertility) on my left inner wrist.

Truly addictive, good thing it's so expensive!

I have a tribal tattoo of Jesus and I plan on getting a full back Scottish claymore. I'd like to also get something that honors the dance but never could think what. Love the Aladdin lamp idea, darn it!

I have a rose with tribal lines on my left ankle that I got just after I turned
18. On my left hip, there is a butterfly that I got to cover a poorly-done rose tattoo, with my daughter's name and birthday. You cant even tell there is something underneath it, and I know its there. On my lower back, there is a crown and the initals of my dance group. Now, I know, I know, I know. Several of us in the group have the crowns, but the meaning is something deeper for me. Queens of the Universe (affectionately called QoTU, or Q2) and being part of that, is the first time that any group of women have just accepted me and loved me in spite of my weirdness. I got it at a particularly stressful point in my life, and it was the group, even though they didnt know it at the time, that put me back together. I could write a whole book on the utter amazing personalities of Q2 and what they mean to me, but to sum it up, they are a lifeline, and I wanted to honor that.

I will wind up with a few more, but I dont know what they will be.
