I have two:

A Celtic-design bird on my right shoulder (from the tails side of the Irish 2p coin, if there are any Irish folk here...). The other is from a woodcut by Arthur Rackham, a silhouette of two little goblin-like characters dancing around a tree which takes up my entire mid to lower back. I had the characters placed quite deliberately so they sit on my mid-hip line and will dance when I do.

FUN-NY GIRL!

The artist must be a woman. Besides, if I don't wait for the "big landmark birthday", it won't have all the meanings I want to associate with it. There's a very good gal local to here who comes highly recommended and I've seen and like her work.

I was thinking about Gypsy Jill in Seattle, but the logistics of a long distance tattooist are just too much.

It's true...the experience is as important as the work itself...I am VERY careful about who inks me...the person has to be not only a great artist, but also technically proficent in HOW the ink is laid IN the skin...my first tattoo isn't as beautiful as my last!
May I ask why the sex of the artist is important to you?

Thank you! And while I do fancy myself creative and crafty, and as much as I'd love to be the one to draw up the final design for my own tattoo, I'm just worried about how the concept would transfer from paper to skin. I need to find an artist I like, then let him play around with my ideas.

No you may not.

Seriously, because I trust a woman's aesthetics and artistic vision. A woman will have a much better chance of understanding the "feel" of what I want, and I communicate better with women as a general rule. On top of that, I just would feel more comfortable with a gal. I pretty much live in a feminine environment as it is, so I feel more secure there.

I initially thought that I wanted only a woman to do my work as well, but interestingly, as I met more and more people in the area, (there's a tattoo shop on every corner out here,) I kept being totally turned off by the particular women I was meeting. If someone is going to embed an image in my flesh, I want to be able to like them, and many of them reminded me of an ex-roommate whose disgusting behaviour led to infestations of three types of vermin. I finally ended up meeting a guy at random who did the prettiest colour work, and he was really cool, so I chose him.

Finding the right artist for yourself can be VERY difficult!

This is absolutely true, regardless of any other factors. You gotta click with your artist. I haven't met this gal yet as its still 2+ years away - Gia's urging to the contrary notwithstanding! - but I have a good feeling about her THUS FAR because she's done a lot of Belly Dancers in my area and seems to understand us. Everyone I've talked to about her just raves about her - but we'll see when the time comes!

Hey! If it hurts to get a tattoo, the artist might as well be easy on the eyes!
