Dear Eshta, I understand and sympathize with your position completely and if I had not seen them for myself, I would think the same way!! I really in my heart think bugs are just creepy, but there are a few that somehow manage to sneak under the line and win my affection. Even that horrible huge spider on my front porch light won me over and I am actually TERRIFIED of them...??? Now, if she had gotten on me, it would have been a whole nother story!! Regards, A'isha |

I have been keeping an eye on this post it's funny indeed. I would like to share this with you be aware it's not funny.
I am a beekeeper or shall I say I used to be one until mama bear came to visit. It was such relaxed time I have ever spent tending to my Queen's .. Yes I had 4 of them at one time in each beehive, and about 250,000 dedicated workers. I do drumming now for a hobby. cheers Better day in the winter time. ![]() the birdbath was shared between them and the birds ![]() the clutter after the attack ![]() Yep that's about 60,000 or 3 pounds of bees ![]() this is the mama bear claws just checking the frame for larva ![]() electric fence nop .. she still got in they must taste yummy ![]()

Dear Mahmoud,
How sad about your bees!! Did they recover or were they permanently damaged? I do like bees. My birth name means "Bee". We have these very cute large striped yellow and black bumble bees up here and they love to get into my Black Locust trees and make the most pleasant buzzy noise when there are a lot of them working in them. I sit on my balcony and enjoy them. They are like some kind of tiny little teddy bears with wings because they look so furry. Regards, A'isha |

Dear Aisha
glad to see bee lover in this forum. Unfortunately after three attempts to rebuild my hives through that summer trying to be smarter than the bear she proved me wrong. It was recommended to shoot the bear which is allowed to for a beekeeper in my area. But I couldn't, wouldn't do that plus it would not have worked either another one with taking its place. Playing tabla seemed to be more attractive to me I have the place near Woodstock .. yes that Woodstock and no I was not there in the 60s or maybe I was and just don't remember. During the summer they have a drum circle in the middle of town from two to four in the afternoon people gather around the circle and just get it all out. Best Regards~Mahmoud

Dear Mahmoud, I am sorry that you were not able to rebuild, but glad you did not shoot the bear. Woodstock, hunh?? LOL Us old folks from the hippie days have a saying, "If you can remember the 60s, you weren't there!!" (Some time I will have to tell you about the night I supposedly saw Jethro Tull and Judy Collins in concert together at Santa Barbara Bowl in California!! ) Regards, A'isha |

I love insects! They are absolutely essential building blocks of our ecosystem - as Sir David Attenborough has said (as I can recall): if humans disappeared from the planet, things would look and function very much the same...but if insects dissappeared, the rest of the creatures on Earth would be unable to survive without them. (From Life In the Undergrowth by the BBC - incredible documentary series, you must watch it if you can!)
Granted I am a biologist, so my views on this are probably a bit different and more pro-bug than the average person's! That being said, I don't deny the creepiness of a whole lot of legs. Sea spiders, for instance - totally creep me out. And centipedes are not my favourite (but I like millipedes). And although I love spiders, I have strict rules for them interacting with me ie: no surprises, and no unwanted touching - although they do not always follow these rules! The thing I am most afraid of actually is the delicateness of all those legs - detached/broken bug/spider legs are my worst nightmare. Yes, bugs have circulatory systems and 'hearts' and 'blood', although arthropod circulatory systems function much differently from vertebrate circulatory systems. Mahmoud, I especially love bees and really hope that you keep bees again one day - the world needs more bees! And I'm also glad you didn't shoot the bear - after all, who can deny honey?? Speaking of honey, something to think about the next time you put honey in your tea: it takes 12 honeybees working their entire lives to make enough honey for 1 teaspoon!
