Gosh, can one just select a career out of the list and all of a sudden - that's what Im gonna do from now on?

I wish it was that easy.... Most people I know ended up doing something totally different from what they spent years studying for....

I have taken longer version of it in psychology class, with some diagrapms building and stuff, had the same result though....

I didn't add my Myers Briggs profile to the other thread because I didn't want to get too off topic, but I reckon it is cool here. I am an INFP, have been every time I took the test, and it seems reasonably accurate. My "I" tends to be pretty extreme- it is not that I don't like people (I do) but dealing with them for extended periods of time exhausts me. I live with a family of introverts- we all require considerable amounts of private time, so no one is hurt by another family member suddenly going into isolation for a day or two.

I have had a wide variety of jobs: cotton and small grains farming, teaching belly dance, fisheries biologist, free lance writer, legal assistant, range conservationist. My husband very wisely says that it is not about what you want to be when you grow up, but what you want to be next.

Career choice is incredibly complex if you want it to be - but then again, some researchers say it's a lot about 'serendipity'!! Imagine, there could be a career that REALLY suits you, like for example, underwater welding or felt hat making - but if you don't have access to diving nearby, or there are no felt hat manufacturers, you would NEVER know your true calling!!

I think you should always research your career/job options thoroughly using as many ways of reviewing them as possible - that includes talking to other people who do the job, visiting different workplaces, reading up about them...but the MOST important thing, I tell my patients who are in career transition, is to know yourself.

And one way to get to know yourself is to use personality tests - another is to work through something thorough like 'What colour is your parachute' to identify your skills both in work and out of work. What I like about WCIYP is that it seeks to look at what makes you unique and to identify the place you will flourish like a plant, rather than seeing you simply as a cog in a machine (which is what happens in so many workplaces).

I think the problem with most careers is huge differenece between what its REALLY like VS what you THINK it is like....

So when you decide to become say an interpreter you might not think you gonna end up say translating some technical paperwork instead of travelling to exciting places... LOL

I CAN strongly relate to careers recommended for my type... But the abyss between desired and reality can be unfathomable....

You GOT it Reen!! It's like if you think about the title 'nurse' - and then meet the following:
- a paediatric nurse
- a GP practice nurse
- a theatre nurse
- a district visiting nurse
- a public health nurse
- oh and the nurse that works on an orthopaedic nurse!

Each one is a nurse and does nursing - but what a difference between them!
The What colour is your parachute book is good because it stresses that you need to go and talk to people who DO the job and not just one person, but a bunch of people, so you get a good idea of the range of that job.

So....has anyone done the lipstick personality test?!! The Lipstick Personality Test
I'm a 'flat top' which is supposed to be
# To the point
# High morals
# Needs approval
# Careful about appearances
# Very dependable
# Conservative
# Quick mind
# Loves challenges
hmmmmm......

I suppose in this world one must look at local job market first and then at career suggestion for his/her type of personality...lol

*sigh*

I've done the Meyers Briggs quite a few times and always come out the same - ENFP. And the description words, "champion", "drama", "talker", "boundless enthusiasm," "powerful convictions," "vivacious", "fiercely individualistic", "personal authenticity", "outstanding intuitive powers", "keen observers of the people around them", "sensitive and alert", "good with people", "spontaneous and dramatic" all apply to me.

My list of career possibilities are:
counselor, marketing specialist, human resources, nurse, psychologist, trainer, artist/actor, designer, teacher, clergy/church worker, writer/editor, entrepreneur/self employed. Several of these appeal to me or I have engaged in them at some point in my life. I was a peer counselor in high school. I was a candy striper (which I guess qualifies as a bit of a volunteer nursing job). I consider myself an artist in that I am a dancer and a professional makeup artist. I have taught beginning bellydance and have been a tutor. I work in my church. I am a writer and editor and an entrepreneur.

Yeah, and what about those who use the little pots of gloss or tubes of petroleum jelly? Tsk. Such thoughtless exclusions may lead to serious psychological repercussions.
