Can anyone suggest resources they have used? e.g. Pimsleur

I'm glad there's a 'turtle' button. I need to slow the tracks down so I can hear and pronounce correctly, but I'm afraid I'll never be able to speak that quickly! Also, the software I'm using basically forces one to also learn the alphabet and script, because it requires you to identify words by sight. This part I like. Pictures of the object in many cases as well, to reinforce the words.

I know there was a thread some time ago about learning Arabic, but is anyone still trying to learn? My drumming teacher is Middle Eastern, but since I started my new job I haven't been able to connect with him to practice my language as well as my drumming.

What software yo use? Rosetta stone?

but if you are doing it at home i suggest... UTLIMATE ARABIC (a yellow small but bit thck book) . Ultimate Arabic has Great grammer and vocabulary for beginners and intermediates of MODERN STANDARD ARABIC but in the last part it has a few notes regarding the dialects...which is great!

Embassies often have courses which are either super cheap or free... If you are lucky to have an embassy close to you it would be cool. ahhh and in my country they offer lessons at the Mosque (Muslim churches) so you might check if you have any mosques around .

Arabic is an awesome language!

I'm in the same boat with masrawy. As I have been living in Cairo, I only know Egyptian dialect. But as masrawy already said, it's mostly understood in other Arab countries as well. I have had no problems when travelling. People usually understand me very well. That I might not understand a word they say, is a smaller problem - they at least know what I want.
