I can't tell you how many times my husband, son and I have traveled over the 35 W Bridge in Minneapolis. As a matter of fact, my son is supposed to race at the U of M campus this weekend. Our travel route would have gone directly over this bridge. I have contacted family and friends who live in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area and I am happy to report that no one has been hurt or injured in this accident. My thoughts and prayers go out to those who have lost loved ones, those who have been injured and to all the rescue workers working hard to help those who needed rescue. I have found it impossible to leave the television tonight, watching the clips of the horrific accident and stories that have brought tears to my eyes. Proudly, I can say I have never seen such an organized plan to rescue the victims of this terrible tragedy. I hope everyone else who has family and friends from the area are safe and sound also. God bless the families of the 7+ families who have lost loved ones in the accident and to the injured.
Prayer of Solace May Christ support us all the day long, till the shadows lengthen, and the evening comes, and the busy world is hushed, and the fever of life is over and our work is done. Then in his mercy may he give us a safe lodging, and holy rest and peace at the last. Amen. |

A horrible, horrifying thing to happen! My prayers go out to those who suffer, and my thanks for preserving those of you who did not get caught in this tragedy.

It is still hard to forget about what happened on that bridge. What is even harder for me is a bridge that is similiar, engineered by the same company who designed the I-35 bridge. The bridge I am talking about is in my hometown of St. Cloud Minnesota. It crosses the Mississippi River on highway 23 right downtown St. Cloud. This bridge is a heavily used bridge also and it was found to have weak plates as did the I-35 bridge. The bridge was closed down last weekend, now I believe it has reopened again. Further investigation is being done to try and figure out what they should do with this bridge. What I can't understand is why the bridge is open with known defects that have caused death to others on a different bridge??? I sure hope nothing happens to anyone in the meantime while they try to figure out what to do with the bridge.

Hi Kute Nurse,
It does not seem right that they are opening that bridge again. I would not want to cross it every day, that's for sure. But in my gut, I believe that the "tripping factor" in the I-35 bridge was all the heavy construction material and equipment piled on one place on the bridge. I think someone is afraid of setting a precedent (at the state level) that they actually have to fix unsafe bridges before they collapse! And the reason they are afraid, is that there are so many bridges in the state that are not structurally sound.![]() |
