I've been reading quite a lot about this movie online, mostly comments from bellydancers getting distressed by the harem scene and/or the presentation of Persians as decadent evil seven-footers/the raging historical inaccuracy. It's just been released here and so I've now seen the trailer.
Amazingly, not *one* comment I've seen online has mentioned the fact that the movie *is almost completely computer-generated or enhanced to look as fake and graphic novelly as possible*. Doesn't anyone think this treatment might tip off the audience to the fact it's fantasy? The trailer looks like a computer game advertisement. Seriously. |

Dear Group,
There is a new book out called "Reel Bad Arabs", that alks about film as a negative image propaganda machine concerning Middle Easterners. Is this just one more of those? I do not own the book yet, but I plan to, especially as a Saudi friend of mine just pointed out how many shows on television are using that same negative imagiing right now. Regards, A'isha |

I promise you, I will get up in arms on the Iranians' behalf immediately after Hollywood stops negative portrayals of blonds, fat people, busty women, disabled people, Southerners, and scientists/mathematicians.
So that should be any day now, right? |

well the thing about art, in whatever form it may take (books, movies, etc), is a caricature of life. generally it is never accurate in description and relies solely on stereotypical portrayals to get other fundamental points across such as will power, perserverance, and determination. these traits carry more weight when the bad guy is BAD and the good guy is GREAT.
does it make it right? i dont know. was there a hidden agenda? i dont know. any assumption i make beyond that, would be just that, an assumption based on a movie, a movie. thats like reading the comics and calling it news, isnt it? |

I don't know how you got from "Hollywood vilifies lots of different groups, so I don't feel particularly sorry for the Iranians." to "two wrongs make a right" (which usually is associated with someone getting back at someone else). I have no problems with Iranians. All the Iranians I've ever met have been nice people. I just don't think that they are so special that I need to protest a movie on their behalf. Especially when perhaps 80% of the American population doesn't even know that Persia and Iran are the same. There are many, many issues which I can spend my time and concern on that are more important to me personally - and more useful to society in general. However, if you decide to spearhead a campaign to defend Iranian society, I wish you success. ![]() |
