I'm deeply embedded in an epic fantasy series, the Crown of Stars series by Kate Elliott. It's an excellent (if a bit confusing at times) series, containing scores of different peoples: kings, centaurs, shades, sorcerers, etc; all facing a cataclysm of DOOM engineered thousands of years ago by shamen using stonehenges.

Book 3 bogged me down a bit, but I'm back on track with book 6, and thoroughly enjoying it.

I am currently reading Orhan Pamuk's "Istanbul". I love Turkey, but I still haven't managed to quite agree with Istanbul, so I am hoping this book will help me along in the process

The book itself is a bit hard to read (I'm reading it in English, which is not my native language), but I love the amount of illustrations (from historical engravings to photos from Pamuk's family albums) and the nostalgic sentiment it creates.

And, there is a pile of books next to my sofa waiting to be read... Don't know when I get the chance to tell you about them...

When I had time to read, I didn’t have much money to buy as many books as I wanted, and now that I have it, I barely have time, and keep falling asleep every night with the book in my hand… so, for months I’ve been trying to get through Abdelwahab Meddeb’s ‘The Malady of Islam’, which I’ve found very tough going and obscurely written… pfft. So in the meantime, I reread Austen’s ‘Pride and Prejudice’ for the umpteenth time, and began Philip Roth’s ‘The Plot Against America’. I’ve also just finished the third book of Lone Wolf and Cub, by K. Koike and G. Kojima... sigh - I wish I could read in Japanese (it's a manga series).

On my ever-growing to-read pile are (first among a bunch of others) the third book of 'Maison Ikkoku' by Rumiko Takahashi... it's another manga, and the story's hilariously funny and sweet, but for some reason I can't seem to pick it up again... also P. Roth's 'The Human Stain', which I'd started to read, but then decided to finish 'The Plot...' first. Also a series of novels set in different periods of Spanish history... can't wait for Spring Break to see if I can finally catch up.

I'm working my way through Jean Plaidy's historical fiction. I stared with William the Conqueror, worked my way through the Plantangenets and am now at Henry VIII and Catharine of Aragon. So many of the queens and princesses had depressing lives as they had no say over who they married and many died in or the result of childbirth.

The Crown of Stars sounds real fun, I have not gotten to that yet, do you recomend it? I am such a hound for Fantasy, Sifi and Horror books, I read them all the time, and often when I should be doing other things instead. :/

I just finished "The Ghost Map" about the cholera outbreak in Regency London. It is also about time for my annual reading of "A Secret Garden." I am also reading a book about middle eastern costume from pre-Islamic days to the present. A'isha suggested it, and it is very good. Can't recall the exact title offhand, but if anyone is interested, I'll go look.

I am reading "Mayada daughter of Irak" by Jean Sasson. It is the story of a single mom from Irak who was incarcerated and tortured during Sadam Hussein's regime. It is a true story, I also recommend the Princess' trilogy (Princess Sultana Al-Saud from Saudi Arabia) by the same author.

The Princess triology is very good, and when it came it realy helped set focus on the condition many women, even the high class and royalty live under in Saudi Arabia.

And yes that costume book sounds real interesting Shanazel.
