I'm pretty sure it means the difference in circumference around the waist and hip. It is supposed to be healthier to have a higher (or lower?) hip to waist ratio meaning that there is bigger difference between the thin waist and wide hips. There is a special number I think but I can't remember it. Just like BMI it's a way to measure your body size and decide if it is in the healthy range.

A ratio is just a fraction so, waist to hip ratio is waist size divided by hip size. Low waist to hip ratio means small waist for hip.
Women tend to have a lower one than men. Younger (and fertile) women have a lower one (body shape changes with menapause). There is also a genetic side. I have a typical Eastern European build - top heavy, no hips - so even as a young, fit woman my waist to hip wasn't the touted ideal. And then there is your weight. Carrying fat around the waist is considered a bad sign for a number of diseases like diabetes and heart disease. So if you carry your excess on your hips and thighs (in theory) you are healthier than those (like me) with no butt or hips who tend to layer it on the belly. |

I was reading an online article regarding pay rates between different looking women. Apparently, women who were taller, thinner and had a "small hip ratio to waist" made more money than their counter parts. I wasn't sure if it meant small hips or small waists. Just curious, as always. Thanks, Azeeza PS The article didn't tell me anything new, which I hoped it would. |
