I get the impression that my wording offended you and I’m sorry for that.

As for Egyptian plays I have seen, my favorite so far is El Za3im. 3adel Imam has always said that he can make people laugh just with the faces he makes, and I thought he was cocky to say that; but his entrance in that play proved me wrong. The most touching part of that play for me is Youssef Daoud’s presence; I admire the strength of persecuted minorities who have met success and admiration in the arts and other arenas in Egypt.

My least favorite play right now is A7lan ya Doktour. In my humble opinion, most of it ranks with the “bidon” nature of this scene Mark posted; the “Turbina” actor here is really cute for 2 seconds, but the initial delight of red shorts, strappy sandals and children's games quickly wears off. I am biased, though: my translations come from a guy who has never liked A7lan ya Doktour. We are aware that other people love that play, including his father, but suum cuique

Your wording did offend me at first, not that I care what you think about Egyptian plays, as I personally think some of them are quite dumb. I just think it's ignorant to judge something one does not understand and to make sweeping judgements based on generalities and superficial observations. It's like hearing my grandmother who doesn't speak english say "geez, Americans and their stand up comedy shows!"

I won't even get into the "persecuted minorities" debate, which is irrelevant to this topic. I personally admire any Egyptian person who has made a significant contribution to the advancement of any field in my country, regardless of his/her color or religous affiliation. I do not get "touched by someone's presence" in an Egyptian play just because they are Christian or Muslim or whatever, simply because it makes no difference to me, and I refuse to give into that superficial mentality that will do "us" more harm than good.

I am biased as well. But as I grow older, I start to realize how important it is to think for myself, rather than have a guy think for me instead.

edit: One more thing, there is no "7" in ahlan ya doktour.

3 = ع
7 = ح

I am sorry I offended you with my wording and I am sorry I made a typo in Arabic.
