Hi Bellydancehoney,
The dancer says in the comments that it's from a Lebanese cd called "Belly Dance with Samara". I was looking for the same cd since I was told that the baladi we are working on is from there. The funny thing is that I thought I recognized this tabla solo and went to check my itunes. Turns out that I have the baladi together with this drumsolo in the same track, on my computer. I didn't know I had it! Weird huh? I want to get the cd anyway so I found it here: At least I think it's this one.Aladdins Cave Voice Of Stars

Oh, I meant in the written comments below the video. Somewhere someone asks about the music and Aisha answers that it's from that cd.
here's a copy of the comment: " I must know the name and CD that this tabla solo came from? Please? Thank you. I love it and the dancer! AishafromGreece (6 months ago) Show Hide Marked as spam Reply | Spam i m sorry that took so long.. Its a cd that a friend brought from Lebanon. It says "Bellydance with Samara", only this i know "

This is a really popular drum solo, it's on several CD's but everyone calls it something different. I know i have at least 3 CD's with this song on them though I can't remember right off the bat which ones.
I have a clip of Soraia Zaied on YouTube dancing to this same song....it's interesting to see how different dancers interpret a piece so differently. Here's part 2... YouTube - Bellydancer Soraia Zaied PART TWO Part 1 is also up on YouTube. Regards Priscilla |

That happened to me with another tabla solo! First I heard it repeated for over an hour in a workshop, then saw it performed a couple of months later (took a good few minutes for me to realise it was the same), then finally discovered it in my own collection. I am really slooow sometimes. And a song we're using in class is on a CD I've had for ages, this time a completely different version, and I only just realised it's the same song. Duh! Though I'd definitely put these "discoveries" in the Things I Like About Bellydance category. ![]() |

Lol!
Some years ago I was told about the life and story of Farid al Atrache and heard some of his music. I LOVED it and just longed for a cd. Went home and FOUND ONE in my collection! I had bought it years earlier without knowing what it was and hadn't listened a lot to it either. All info except "Belly Dance" in arabic. It was a treasure!

Thanks Gisela. See this is what I get for not watching the entire clip and reading the comments! The thing about tabla solos is that so many are very similar because the essence of the tabla solo is that it is percussion only with no melodic instruments. And there are standard progressions through rhythms and common ornamentation styles. It is interesting to see how different musicians interpret the same rhythm shift patterns and same types of accents and ornamentations and how different dancers respond to them.
My big project of 2008 is baladi progressions with the baladi drum solo. So many that sounds similar because they are using something like Aminti Billah but different based on what melodic instruments are used and how the drummer and solo melodic musician interact with each other and with the dancer. To me this is the most fascinating thing I have studied yet, both as a dancer and as a drummer. Souzan |
