Dear A'isha (and other experts),
I kind of need your help. I was talking with my teacher earlier about Saudi dances and she mentioned somebody telling her about a certain Saudi rhythm called Adani. We talked about Samri/Khaleegi dance as well but kind of got confused. So my questions: What exactly is Adani? I heard it comes from a region called Aden. Can anyone shed a light on this rhythm and what might be danced to it? Is it similar to Samri? What exactly are the differences (If these can even be compared, I don't know much about Samri either. I feel it must be something about geographical position of where the dances come from as well though). Also, how does one describe these rhythms? (in terms of rhythm... counts/beats or dums and teks for that matter) Are there any good examples of Adani and Samri out there (though I think I know what Samri sounds like, I'm unable to describe it well)? I hope these are not weird questions and I really sincerely hope somebody can shed a light on this! I'm curious. Many, many thanks, Iris Last edited by Yshka; 02-14-2008 at 01:06 AM. |

Dear Yshka,
I am sorry not to be of any help whatsoever, but unless I heard the rhythm I would not be able to tell if it was samri or some other rhythm. I am not familiar with Adani as a term, so hopefully there will be someone here who can enlighten us both! Basic samri rhythm is: DOUM tek tek- Doum TEK, DOUM tek tek- doum TEK, ad infinitum. Of course, there are bunches of ways to fancy it up, and the original is played quite slowly. Regards, A'isha |

Dear A'isha,
thank you for your reply! I've also not heard of this term before, and am only familiar with Samri to a certain extent. We were told this term is derived from the name of the place the dance comes from (which was said to be 'Aden'), but we have no clue of what exactly this rhythm is like. I hope somebody knows, thanks again for your explanation. You've helped a lot already on the Samri part. Also I have just finished reading your articles on Samri at the raqsazar.com library. I loved reading them and they have cleared up a great deal for me. I'm very interested and eager to learn more about Samri dances. Thank you and best wishes, Yshka |

Dear Yshka,
I do not feel that I was of much help, but thank you, and I am glad you have found the articles helpful. I am very lucky because my Arab friends are all so willing to give me information that I can then pass on to other people interested in the dance form. Regards, A'isha |

You may find this reference helpful:
Jas's-- Middle Eastern Rhythms FAQ (for dumbec, doumbec, doumbek, arabic tabla, darabuka, tombak, zarb ...) : Rhythms for Dumbek and Belly Dance It contains the rhythm "adoni" which is in 4/4 time, and apparently originates from Yemen. |
