A'isha, have you heard any of the Ahlan Wa Sahlan compilation CDs? I know Dahlal carries them because that's where I got them.
Actually now that I think about it, I don't really care for them. If I remember correctly, there's too much pop. Never mind. The BEST music, and I think you probably have all these, are the CDs with like a horrible rainbow colored "Bellydance" in the title, and usually a famous Egyptian dancer on the cover. Dahlal also has these. I got Shik Shak Shok off one of these Cds and remembered that I adored this music. It wasn't terribly synthesizer either. That's been my gripe with Nourhan Sharif's cds -- nice music, but it sounds too synthy to me. |

Dear Aziyade,
I have been so paranoid about buying any music lately, having spent oodles of cash on sucky stuff, that I may not have the music you are referring to. I will also check with Dahlal. I think she is a doll as well as having good stuff or sale. My dance company bought a bunch of assuit from her last year. I met her years ago in Utah, of all places. ( Sedonia can vouch for the fact that Utah is one jammin' state when it comes to belly dance. The place is roiling with them!) Regards, A'isha |

Orchestral 'old' music is my favorite too, even if I still can't really do justice to it - totally agree with everyone here about the richness of the music, and a something that just can't be found in more modern stuff. A'isha, I don't know if they're available in the US, but I loved Nesma's albums 'Del Nilo al Guadalquivir' and 'Memories of Cairo' - you can listen to samples of the music at Nesma's site: NESMA Music.

A'isha,
Radio Bastet frequently plays songs by the composer who composed a lot of Nadia Gamal's music - Rafik Hobeika. It's somewhat Mohammed Abdel Wahab in sound. The album she credits frequently is called Music for an Oriental Dance volume 1. Now I have NO idea if this album is available on CD -- or if any of his music is on CD, BUT the podcasts don't sound all that bad. There's not a lot of popping and crackling. The music actually sounds pretty good. You could download the podcasts and then crop out the pieces you like. I was just listening to the end of program 6, which features one of Hobeika's songs, and I thought of you. You might check these out if you don't already have them. As I listen to more, I'll try to make note of which casts have old school music if you want. She plays a LOT of Wahab -- but you probably already have all that on CD already. LOL -- I"m old too. I still have "vinyl."
There's a LOT of different stuff on Radio Bastet, and like I said in another post -- I think a lot of these albums were marketed as "Hipster Hookah Lounge" music, and not necessarily real dance music. Some of it is fun to listen to, but in no way Middle Eastern. Some is classic dance music, some is GREAT old stuff. She even plays cuts from album by Jodette from time to time (!!) -- on program 5 or 6 (or maybe 7?) she plays a finger cymbal "instructional" track from Jodette that is amazing. She does cymbal patterns I'd never seen/heard before. I wish she had these album(s) (??) available on CD. Sigh. |

I have the one Aziyade refers to by Rofeik Habika. It has 4 tracks: Amale, Joumana, Nado, and Sahar. Also, "The best belly dance album in the world ever vol II" has some good old music by Faruk Salama. |
